불특정 대상 폭력에 대한 긴장 요인 중심의 범죄사회학적 해석과 예방대책

국문 초록

공공장소에서 불특정인들을 대상으로 저질러지는 폭력 범죄는 범행 동기가 불분명하고 범행 대상이 특정되지 않는다는 점 때문에 많은 사람에게 두려움을 불러일으켜 왔다. 그동안 우리 사회에서 이른바 묻지마 범죄의 원인과 대응책에 관해서는 주로 행위자의 심리적 비정상성을 중심으로 논의됐다. 이번 연구에서는 심리학적 프레임에 경도된 묻지마 범죄 담론의 한계를 비판하고, 범죄사회학 이론의 사회환경적 요인을 중심으로 이 문제를 해석하고자 했다. 일차적으로 심리적 비정상성을 강조하는 용어를 대신해 범행 대상의 불특정성을 핵심적 특징으로 하는 ‘불특정 대상 폭력’(unspecified target violence)이라는 용어를 제시하였다. 다음으로 불특정 대상 폭력의 근본적 원인을 범죄사회학 이론의 긴장(strain) 요인을 중심으로 설명하였다. 긴장이 폭력을 유발하는 인과기제를 구조주의 차원과 주관주의 차원으로 구분하여 논의하였다. 마지막으로 불특정 대상 폭력의 예방을 위한 포괄적이고 종합적인 방안으로 긴장 완화, 긴장 관리, 그리고 긴장 해소 정책들을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

Crimes of violence against unidentified individuals in public spaces have instilled fear in many, given their unclear motives and unspecified targets. The prevailing discourse on these “mut-zi-ma crimes” in Korean society has predominantly centered around the psychological abnormality of the perpetrators. This study critiques the limitations of such psychological perspectives and endeavors to reinterpret the issue through a sociological lens, emphasizing socio-environmental factors. To broaden the discussion, the author introduces the term “unspecified target violence,” drawing attention to the lack of specificity in the selection of victims. The study then delves into the underlying causes of this type of violence, focusing on the strain factor within the sociological theory of crime. Causal mechanisms leading to straininduced violence are explored, distinguishing between structuralist and subjectivist dimensions. In conclusion, the study proposes comprehensive and holistic measures to prevent unspecified target violence, including strategies for strain reduction, strain management, and strain removal.
