국문 초록

이 글은 10.19때 발생한 개죽음이 소설 세 편 『절망 뒤에 오는 것』(1963), 『여수의 눈물』(2020), 『아버지의 해방일지』(2022)에 어떻게 드러나는지를 확인하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 죽음에 대한 문제를 다루는데, 그것도 하이데거가 『존재와 시간』에서 드러낸 죽음에 대한 분석을 10.19의 죽음과 연관해서 다루었다. 여기에서 10.19때 죽은 전남동부지역민들의 죽음, 즉 국민인데도 국민이 아니게 된 ‘비국민’의 죽음은 ‘본래적인 죽음’도 아니고 ‘비본래적인 죽음’도 아닌 일명 ‘개죽음’으로 드러난다. 여기에서 ‘개죽움’이란 ‘손가락총에 의한 학살’로 죽음의 이유조차 모르고 죽은 죽음을 의미한다. 이런 개죽음은 10.19와 연관된 소설 세 편에서 생생하게 형상화된다. 세 작품에는 개죽음이 묘사되어 있는데, 특히 『절망 뒤에 오는 것』(1963), 『여수의 눈물』(2020)에는 ‘손가락총’을 즉결처분과 같은 말로 묘사하고 있다. 그것은 국민을 보호하고 보살펴야 하는 국가가 국민을 국민이 아닌 자로 만드는 과정을 통하여 학교 운동장에서 자행한 것이었다. 그런데 세 작품에서 개죽음에 대한 양태는 비슷하게만 드러난 것이 아니라 발표 시기, 작가의 위치, 작품의 초점화에 따라 약간의 차이가 있다. 그러니까 작가가 10.19를 겪은 시기에 따라 개죽음을 묘사하는 양태가 달랐다. 전병순은 작가가 20대에 겪은 일이어서 섬세하고 구체적으로 묘사한 것에 비해, 백시종과 정지아의 작품에는 작중인물의 증언으로 개죽음이 드러나 있다. 이런 작품 및 또 다른 작품들의 등장으로 한국 현대사의 질곡으로 여겨지고 있는 10.19가 비은폐되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

This text appears to be an analysis discussing how the incident of Worthless-death(Gaejoogume) that occurred on October 19th is portrayed in three novels: Beyond Despair (1963), Tears of Yeosu (2020), and Father’s Liberation Diary (2022). In addressing the theme of death, it delves into Heidegger’s analysis of death in Being and Time, connecting it to the deaths on October 19th, particularly those of the individuals in the eastern part of Jeollanam Province who, despite being citizens, died as ‘non-citizens’ or ‘anti-nationals’. These deaths are described as not being ‘original deaths’ or ‘non-original deaths’ but rather as a so-called ‘worthless-death’. Here, ‘worthless-death (Gaejoogume)’ means ‘massacre by finger gun’ and death without even knowing the reason for death. This concept of a ‘worthless-death’ vividly manifests in the three novels associated with October 19th. In particular, Beyond Despair (1963) and Tears of Yeosu (2020) depict the act of disposing of individuals with a ‘finger gun’ as if summarily executed. This act occurred on a school playground, carried out by the state, which should protect and care for its citizens but, paradoxically, turns them into non-citizens. However, the portrayal of ‘worthless-death’ in these works exhibits some differences.
