국문 초록

이 글은 수· 당 시기 기후에 관한 선행 연구와 황사에 대한 검토를 통하여 기후사 연구의 방향을 모색한 것이다. 특히 역사에서 기후의 역할에 주목하면서도, 기후 결정론에서 벗어나는 길을 찾고자 하였다. 첫째, 선행 연구에서 기후 사료에 대한 해석을 둘러싼 논란을 보았다. 축가정은 식물의 생장 지역에 관한 사료에 근거하여 수· 당 시기가 온난기라고 주장하였으나, 모중행과 만지민 등은 식물의 생장 지역은 기후가 아닌 사회적 요인이나 사람의 역할에 의해 결정된다고 하여, 기후 온난기설에 이의를 제기하였다. 둘째, 기후사 연구의 시간과 공간의 척도에 대해서도 주목하였다. 수· 당 시기의 기후는 주로 왕조와 100년 단위의 시공간 척도 위에서 연구되었으나, 그 기준이 좀 더 세분될 필요가 있음을 지적하였다. 가령 당 전기를 온난기로 정의한다고 해서, 당시 기후 돌변이 돌궐 제국 붕괴에 영향을 미친 일이 간과되어서는 안 되는 것이다. 또한 전국 단위의 기후 평가와는 별도로, 농목교착대나 산지 등 특정 공간의 기후에 대한 관심도 필요해 보였다. 셋째, 기후 결정론의 문제에 대해서 논의하였다. 최근 프록시 데이터 분석에 기초한 과학적 기후사 연구의 급증과 함께, 역사에 대한 기후 결정론적 견해도 고개를 들고 있다. 하지만 선행 연구들을 모아보면 자연 과학자들의 연구 결과도 잠정적이고, 해석의 여지를 갖는 것에 불과함을 알 수 있다. 사회와 기후 간의 관계는 가능한 많은 자료를 통해 구성되는 역사적 맥락 위에서 파악되어야 하는 것이다. 넷째, 황사 발생에 주목할 경우, 당대 기후사에 ①‘고대후기 소빙기’(6세기 중반~7세기 중반)와 ②후기의 건조기(8세기 후반~9세기 전반) 등 두 차례의 위기 국면이 있었다는 추정이 가능해 보였다. 그런데 ①기 후반에는 정관의 치세가 열렸으나, ②기에는 번진 체제의 혼란이 시작되었다. 이처럼 서로 다른 상황이 빚어진 원인은 결국 당시의 역사적 상황과 사람들의 대응 방식에서 찾아질 수 있는 것이 아닌가 한다. 기후가 중요하기는 하지만, 역사 전개의 방향을 결정하는 힘은 사람들 쪽에서 찾아질 수 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

This article discusses methods of climate history research through a review of climate history and yellow dust in the Sui and Tang periods. In particular, it emphasizes the importance of climate issues in history, but is also interested in ways to move away from climate determinism. First, we saw a problem with the interpretation of the documents of climate history. Based on the data about the plant's growing region, Zhu Ke Zhen claimed that Sui - Tang period was a warm time. However, two scholars, Mou Zhong Xing and Man Zhi Min, criticized this argument. They emphasized the importance of social context in the interpretation of climatic data. Second, we talked about how to define scales of time and space in the study of climate history. Whether the climate was warmer or cooler is all talked about at the spatial scale of dynasties and the temporal scale of centuries. But different scales seemed necessary. In the early Tang, the sudden upheavals of the climate led to the collapse of the Turk empire. We also noted the implications of the specialized climate of certain regions. This is why it is necessary to look at climate history at different scales. Third, the issue of climate determinism was discussed. In recent years, scientific climate history research based on natural proxy data has made great advancements, but at the same time, climate determinism, the view that climate determines history, is also common. However, the results of scientific climate research are also provisional and open to interpretation. How human societies respond to climate change must be understood in the context of specific historical conditions. Fourth, the yellow sandstorms highlighted particular phases of the climate at the time: the Late Antiquity Little Ice Age (mid-sixth to mid-seventh century) and the dry period of the late eighth and early ninth centuries, which made the climate crisis of the time more evident. However, the Tang dynasty faced the same climate crisis, which either ushered in a national heyday or plunged into political turmoil. To understand why these different outcomes occurred, we need to look at the specific historical circumstances of the time. We thought this would allow us to focus on the climate issue but at the same time move away from climate determinism.
