국문 초록

본 연구는 요한일서 1:1에 나오는 ‘앞 아르케스’(avpV arv chj/ )가 태초를 가리키는 것이 아니라, 예수 그리스도의 공생애 기간을 가리킨다고 주장한다. 그 이유는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 요한복음 1:1에 근거해창조의 때라고 주장하는 이들이 있는데, 두 구절은 비슷해 보이지만엄연히 다르다. ‘앞 아르케스’와 ‘엔 아르케’는 전치사가 다르며, 두구절에 나오는 로고스의 의미도 다르다. 둘째, 요한일서의 기록목적중 하나는 영지주의적 거짓 가르침에 대항하여 육체로 오신 예수 그리스도를 변증하는 것이다. 이런 목적 하에 요한은 1:1에서 자신이예수 그리스도의 공생애를 직접 목격했다고 밝힌다. 셋째, 요한일서1:1의 구조 분석에 따르면, ‘호 엔 앞 아르케스’는 목격 경험을 표현하는 다른 관계대명사 절과 평행을 이룬다. 따라서 ‘호 엔 앞 아르케스’도 창조가 아니라 목격에 초점을 맞추어 이해할 수 있다. 이런이유로 ‘앞 아르케스’는 요한이 직접 목격한 예수의 공생애 때를 가리킨다고 할 수 있다. 다른 한편, 본 연구는 요한일서에 나오는 ‘앞 아르케스’의 다른 용례들은 뜻이 다양해서(요일 2:7, 13, 14; 24; 3:8, 11), 1:1에 나오는‘앞 아르케스’의 정확한 의미를 파악하는 결정적인 근거가 되지 못한다고 본다. 또한 어떤 이들은 70인경에서 ‘앞 아르케스’가 영원의 개념으로 사용되기 때문에, 요한일서 1:1도 그런 개념으로 볼 수 있다고 주장한다(70인경 합 1:12; 미 5:1). 그러나 70인경 용례와 요한일서 1:1은 그 문맥이 다르다. 전자는 영원하신 하나님이나 메시아를설명하는 문맥이고, 요한일서는 사도가 목격한 경험을 나누는 문맥이다. 따라서 요한일서나 70인경의 다른 용례들은 ‘앞 아르케스’(요일 1:1)의 의미를 밝히는 데 적절한 근거가 되지 못한다.

영문 초록

This study argues that ‘from the beginning’(apv V avrchj/ ) in 1 John 1:1 does not signify the beginning of creation but rather points to the entire period of Jesus Christ's public earthly life. The reasons for this are as follows: Firstly, some claim based on John 1:1 that it refers to the time of creation, but these two verses are quite different. ‘from the beginning’ and ‘in the beginning’ use different prepositions, and the meaning of ‘logos’ in the two verses is also different. Secondly, one of the recording purposes of 1 John is to testify to the incarnate Jesus Christ, countering gnostic false teachings. In line with this purpose, John explicitly states in 1:1 that he personally witnessed Jesus Christ. Thirdly, according to the structural analysis of 1 John 1:1, ‘what was from the beginning’ parallels other relative pronouns expressing the witnessing experience. Thus, ‘what was from the beginning’ can be understood to focus on witnessing rather than creation. For these reasons, ‘from the beginning’ refers to the time of Jesus Christ's public earthly life, which John personally witnessed. On the other hand, this study considers the various meanings of ‘from the beginning’ in other occurrences in 1 John, making it difficult to grasp the precise meaning of ‘from the beginning’ in 1:1. Some argue that based on its usage in the Septuagint (LXX), ‘from the beginning’ in 1 John 1:1 should also be understood in an eternal sense (LXX Genesis 1:12; Micah 5:1). However, the context of the Septuagint and 1 John 1:1 are different. The former pertains to the eternal God or the Messiah, whereas 1 John deals with the experiences witnessed by the apostles. Therefore, the other occurrences of ‘from the beginning’ in 1 John or the Septuagint do not provide sufficient evidence to elucidate the meaning of ‘from the beginning’ in 1:1.
