영문 초록

In 2 Corinthians 3:3, the phrase “[that which is] inscribed…on the stone tablets” is typically interpreted as referring to the tablets of the covenant given to Moses. As well known, it is evident that 2 Corinthians 3:3 alludes to LXX Exodus 34:1-9 and LXX Ezekiel 11:19 and 36:26. In contrast, the grammatical connection between the phrase οὐκ ἐν πλαξὶν λιθίναις ἀλλ’ ἐν πλαξὶν καρδίαις σαρκίναις and ἐπιστολή is often overlooked. Official letters endorsing emissaries were occasionally recorded on inscriptions, made accessible to a wider audience. The letter made known and read by all in 2 Corinthians 3:1-3 can be understood as a ‘letter’ (epistle) inscribed in stele.’ Thus, the image of the stone tablets of the Law given to Moses overlaps with the letters inscribed on stele, symbolising both glorious external conditions. In particular, the image of Moses is elaborated upon in 2 Corinthians 3:7-18, and 2 Corinthians 3:3 serves as a kind of hinge where the image of the “letter of recommendation” (3:1-3) intersects with that of Moses’ tablets of the law (3:7-18). In 2 Corinthians, Paul portrays his ministry as an envoy between God and the members of the Corinthian community. Paul asserts that it is not the external social credentials such as official letters inscribed on stelae to commend envoys that validate the integrity of his ministry, but rather the Corinthian Christ-followers themselves. This interpretation matches with the context of 2 Corinthians 5:18-20, where Paul is depicted as a diplomatic envoy sent from God to the Corinthian church.
