국문 초록

불교 경전 속 중립적인 성격을 유지하는 음식들의 내용과 대조적으로 빨리, 한역 경전 속 나타나는 마늘은 대부분 부정적인 대상으로 그려진다. 이에 본 연구에서는 두 언어 전통의 경전 속 마늘의 맥락적 이해와 함의를 포괄적으로 제시하고자 한다. 연구 내용으로는 1) 불교와 인도 브라만 전통 속 마늘에 대한 부정적 인식의 기원(起源)을 살펴보며, 2) 빨리, 한역 경전 간 마늘에 대한 내용의 비교 및 분석을 통해 유사점과 차이점을 분석한다. 3) 마지막으로 마늘이 악업(惡業)과 같은 실질적 업을 형성시키는 대상이 될 수 있는지의 여부와 기원의 유사성을 공유하는 고기와의 비교를 진행하고자 한다. 각각의 해당 내용을 통해 힌두 경전과 불교 경전 속 마늘에 내재된 힌두 다르마 샤스트라 문헌의 찬다라(cāṇḍāla)적 속성과 동시에 약용으로써 취식을 허용하는 공통된 예외성, 빨리, 한역 경전에서 마늘과 관련된 냄새와 여성관 속 나타난 상이한 맥락적 의미와 함의를 확인 할 수 있다. 그리고 식물로써의 마늘, 고기와의 비교 등을 통해 마늘에 관한 전통적인 연구 접근을 넘어 넓은 시각에서 여타 불교 교리와 마늘의 부정함이 가지는 상응성을 재검토할 수 있다. 이를 통해 보다 입체적인 시각에서 불교 내 마늘에 관한 종합적 이해를 제시할 수 있으리라 판단된다.

영문 초록

This research offers a comprehensive exploration of the unique role and implications of garlic within both Pāli and Chinese Buddhist scriptures, which stands in stark contrast to Buddhism's typically neutral stance towards food. This study unfolds through three interconnected inquiries: tracing the origins of the aversion to garlic and its links with Indian Brahmin tradition, undertaking an intertextual analysis across Pāli and Chinese scriptures to unearth consistent themes and divergent narratives, and evaluating whether garlic can constitute substantial karma, including negative actions, and comparing it with meat, which shares similarities in origin. Through each of these considerations, this study aims to identify the inherent negative attributes of garlic in Hindu and Buddhist scriptures, akin to the cāṇḍāla in Hindu dharmaśāstra literatures, as well as its common exceptionality allowing consumption for medicinal purposes. Moreover, by delving into garlic’s smell and the view of women related to garlic as depicted in Pāli and Chinese scriptures, the objective is to understand the diverse contextual meanings and implications associated with garlic. And striving to transcend conventional research approaches concerning garlic, garlic is examined by its botanical characteristics, and compared to meat. This effort seeks to reassess the parallelism between diverse Buddhist doctrines and the inherent negativity associated with garlic from a more comprehensive viewpoint. Through this prism, it is postulated that we can elucidate a more comprehensive understanding of the significance of garlic within Buddhism, offering a multidimensional perspective.
