대한불교조계종 설립과 九山의 역할

국문 초록

구산 수련(1910-1983)이 출가한 1937년 무렵 한국불교의 수행 풍토는 많이 변질되어 있었다. 그런 여건 속에서 구산은 한국불교의 전통을 인식하고 올바른 수행자의 모습을 잃지 않기 위해 노력하였다. 광복 후에는 한국불교를 바로 세우는 일에 노력하였다. 현대 대한불교조계종 설립과 守成에도 기여하였다. 그 과정을 보면 정화운동 초기 구산은 전형위원과 추진위원, 종회 의원, 운집부 위원, 전남 종무원장, 감찰원장 등 여러 소임을 맡았다. 정화운동이 정체되었을 때 혈서로써 분위기를 전환하였다. 이런 활동은 통합종단 설립에 많은 도움을 주었다. 구산은 1966년 이후 주석한 송광사에서 대한불교조계종 초기 정책을 실천하였다. 첫 번째는 송광사에 조계총림을 창설하여 도제를 양성한 일이다. 총림 창설은 정화운동 초기부터 제안되고 실시되었지만 미진하였다. 그 후 1965년 총림법 실행과 1965년 비구니 총림, 1967년 해인총림 창설에 관한 종책 입안에 참여하면서 송광사 총림 창설을 인식하게 되었다. 1969년 조계총림을 창설하며 修禪社 재건하였고 佛日會를 조직하여 외호 세력으로 삼았다. 그리고 3년의 결사를 3회 실시하여 많은 도제를 양성하였다. 두 번째는 불교현대화 정책에 맞게 7바라밀 운동으로 생활불교를 지향하였고, 세계 포교를 통해 한국불교의 국제화를 도모한 일이다. 구산은 어렵고 힘든 교리의 이해가 아닌 생활 속에서 불교를 실천하는 일을 불자의 올바른 길로 여겼다. 또한 세계 곳곳에 사찰을 세우고, 외국인 제자를 양성하며, 그리고 송광사에 불일국제선원을 세웠다. 이런 활동은 각국의 불교가 교류하여 一味를 이루어 세계를 포용하면 평등이 바탕이 된 세계평화가 이루어진다는 거시적 안목에서 나온 활동이었다.

영문 초록

Ven. Gusan(1910-1983) was born in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do in 1910. He became a monk in 1937. At this time, the practice culture of Korean Buddhism was greatly deteriorating due to the influence of Japan and Japanese Buddhism. Although the conditions were difficult, he tried to become a practitioner who upheld the traditions of Korean Buddhism. In 1946, Korean Buddhism established Mobeomchonglim, an educational institution for monks, at Haeinsa Temple. This was to restore Korean Buddhism, which had been damaged during the Japanese colonial period. Gusan participated in the Mobeomchonglim and took on various duties. This policy was suspended due to the June 25 Incident in 1950. Gusan contributed to the establishment and maintenance of the Jogye Order of modern Korean Buddhism. During the purification movement, he took on several responsibilities. In August 1955, he wrote a justification for the purification movement of Korean Buddhism with his own blood. These activities had a great influence on the establishment of the Unified Order of Korean Buddhism in 1962. Gusan stayed at Songgwangsa Temple since 1966. He implemented the early policies of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism at Songgwangsa Temple. First, it was the establishment of Jogye Chonglim at Songgwangsa Temple and the education of monks. Second, it presented a direction for practicing Buddhism in daily life. And he sought to internationalize Korean Buddhism through world missionary work. He thought that Buddhism practiced in daily life was the best activity. Gusan built many temples around the world. Many foreigners who learned from him became monks. An international Zen center was established at Songgwangsa Temple, allowing foreign monks to practice.
