폐기되는 소뼈를 재활용한 장신구 연구

국문 초록

장신구 작가들은 그동안 많은 소재들을 연구하고 사용하였으며, 재료를 능수능란하게 다루는 기술과 실험적 조형 활동을 통해 자신의 작가적 정체성을 찾기도 한다. 이렇듯 재료는 예술적 자기표현을 위한 심미적 기능에 집중하게 하며, 표현의 수단이 된다. 동물은 우리의 의식주에 많은 영향을 주었으며, 그들의 뼈는 기물을 제작했던 석기시대 때부터 일상생활에 편의를 제공하는 도구와 장신구를 만드는 재료로 사용되었다. 그러나 오늘날에는 산업과 기술의 발달로 인해 각각의 용도로 사용된 후에는 일반 폐기물로 버려지고 있다. 본 고는 폐기되고 있는 동물의 뼈 중에서 소뼈를 사용한 장신구 제작에 관한 연구로, 버려진 폐 뼈가 장신구 재료로써 재활용 가능한 다양한 방법을 마련하고자 한다. 이에 폐 소뼈의 재활용 가능성에 대해 알아보고, 현대 장신구 작업에서 소뼈가 어떻게 활용되었는지 살펴보았다. 그 결과 소뼈는 폐기되는 동물의 뼈 중에서도 구하기 쉬우며, 강도와 부피, 가공이 가능한 재료였으며, 여러 분야에서도 재활용에 관한 연구가 이루어지고 있었다. 연구자는 이러한 폐 소뼈를 장신구 재료로 재활용하기 위해 자르기, 조각하기, 광내기, 탈색, 염색법의 실험을 진행하였으며, 직접 재료를 준비하여 삶기와 건조하기의 과정부터 여러 방법을 거쳐 뼈의 색과 형태의 변형이 가능하게 되었다. 이렇게 준비된 폐 소뼈는 물질로써 가지는 특징과 재생의 의미로 사용되었고, 뼈를 지지하는 세포의 유기적인 형태를 대입하여 장신구 제작으로 조형화하였다. 연구 결과 폐기되는 소뼈와 세포를 표현한 금속의 결합은 각 재료의 물성을 서로 극대화되어 창작 재료로써 잠재적 가능성을 볼 수 있었다. 또한 조형 활동에서 소재의 한계성을 넘어 수공예적 기술과 심미성을 모두 가지는 업사이클링(Upcycling) 장신구로써 폐 소뼈의 또 다른 조형 가능성을 제시할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Jewelry artists have studied and used many materials, and they often find their own identity as artists through skillful handling of materials and experimental formative activities. In this way, materials allow the artists to focus on the aesthetic function of artistic self-expression and become a means of expression. Animals have had a great influence on our food, clothing, and shelter, and animal bones have been used as a material to make tools and jewelry that provide convenience in daily life since the Stone Age, when objects were made. However, recently, due to the development in industry and technology, after being used for each purpose, it is discarded as general waste. This research is a study on the production of jewelry using cattle bones among animal bones that are being discarded, and intends to prepare various methods in which discarded lung bones can be recycled as jewelry materials. It examined the reusability of lung bones and how they have been used in modern jewelry work. Cattle bones are the easiest to obtain among discarded animal bones, and are a material that has strength, volume, and processing potential, and research was being conducted in various fields on recycling. In order to recycle these discarded cattle bones into jewelry materials, the researchers conducted experiments of cutting, carving, polishing, bleaching, and dyeing, and it was possible to modify the color and shape of the bones through various methods from the process of boiling and drying by preparing the materials. The discarded bones were prepared and used in this way as a symbol for their material characteristics and regeneration, and the organic form of the cells supporting the bones was substituted and molded into jewelry production. As a result, the combination of discarded cattle bones and metals representing cells maximized the physical properties of each material to each other, and it was possible to see its potential as a creative material. In addition, it was possible to suggest another possibility of molding waste cattle bones as an upcycling jewelry that has both handcrafted technology and aesthetics beyond the limitations of materials in formative activities.
