현대설치미술에서 나타나는 삶과 죽음의 조형 표현 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 설치미술작품을 중심으로 전개된 삶과 죽음의 조형적 표현방법을 분석한 것이다. 이를 통해 수명연장이 되고 있는 현대에서는 삶과 죽음이라는 모티브를 어떠한 조형 언어를 통해 관람객의 적극적 참여를 유도하고 표현하고 있는지를 고찰하였다. 참여는 관람객의 공감대를 형성하여 작품과 작가, 관람객이 상호소통하게 하는 특징을 가지고 있다. 이는 이원성을 가지는 수직성과 수평성의 조형 언어를 통해 표현할 수 있었다. 이를 증명하는 역사의 예는 삼한시대(三韓時代)의 수직성을 갖는 솟대부터 중세 기독교의 시대에 사용된 상징기호인 ‘십(十)자’ 등을 들 수 있다. 현대에는 설치미술을 통해 삶과 죽음을 수직성, 수평성을 응용한 표현으로써 나타낼 수 있었으며 이를 증명하기 위한 선행연구로 20세기 초반 기하학적 추상 작품에 해당하는 모더니즘 작가들을 분석하였다. 이러한 조형은 따로 표현됨으로써 각각의 의미를 명확히 나타내기도 하지만 함께 표현됨으로써 합일, 통합 등의 이원성, 양가성을 나타내기도 한다. 이로써 인간에게 삶과 죽음은 깊은 상호 연관성과 조화(造化)성을 띠는 자연적인 현상임을 의미하게 된다. 이렇게 대립하는 조형인 수직과 수평은 동존함으로써 상호보완적인 상관성을 띠기도 하며 융합·융통한 성질을 띤다. 일상에 상시 존재하며 만물의 근원이 되는 이러한 기본적 조형은 곧 인간 존재의 본질, 그리고 삶과 죽음을 상징한다. 인간은 모두 죽음을 향해 가고 있으며 우리는 그것을 삶이라고 부른다. 이처럼 인간의 삶은 죽음과 깊은 연관이 있으며 인류는 삶과 죽음이 끊임없이 반복되므로 삶과 죽음은 수직성, 수평성과 상호유기적(相互有機的) 관계가 있다고 볼 수 있다. 죽음은 인간의 숙명이자 영원히 해결할 수 없는 것이다. 결국 죽음이 있기에 삶은 좋은 것이라는 사실과 삶의 유한성을 받아들임으로써 죽음에 대한 두려움을 완화하여 삶의 가치에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있다. 이를 설치미술의 상호작용, 참여적 성격을 통해 죽음에 대해 간접적으로 느끼며 현대의 현재를 살아가는 삶의 의미를 다시금 고찰해 볼 수 있는 계기가 될 수 있다. 이로써 죽음의 본질에서 삶의 열정을 찾을 수 있다. 또한 이러한 조형의 분석은 현대설치미술의 주역인 영국의 젊은 미술가들 ‘yBa(young British artists)’ 중 마크 퀸, 데미안 허스트의 2000년대 인체작업을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이들은 수평의 인체 조형을 활용하여 죽음을 나타냈으며 설치미술의 참여적 요소를 통해 관람자는 수직성을 띠어 삶과 죽음을 상징적으로 나타냈다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the formative expression methods pertaining to life and death unfolded through the works of installation art. Through this, it explored what formative languages are deployed to express the motives of life and death in the contemporary world where lifespan is becoming longer. This could be expressed through vertical and horizontal formative elements which have a duality. Alongside the Sotdaebearing the vertical element of the time of the Three HanStates and ‘the Cross(十) which is a symbolic sign used in the middle age Christianity, the vertical and the horizontal elements of contemporary installation art could be manifested based on the interworking with life and death and expression through works of art. For a long time, while the vertical bore active meanings such as liquidity and life, the horizontal had static meanings such as immobility, tranquility and death, which have been expressed into variously shaped forms. While such formative art clearly shows each meaning through separate expression, it also stands for duality and ambivalence such as conformity and integration as they are expressed alongside. Accordingly, to humans, life and death have come to mean natural phenomena revealing deep interrelations and harmony. The contrasting formative statuses, the vertical and the horizontal show mutually supplementary correlation by coexisting while at the same time, they stand for properties of fusion and flexibility. The indirect feeling of death through interaction and participatory characteristics of installation art may help with further exploration of the meaning of life in the presence in our contemporary time. Also, the analysis of such formative art was conducted with a focus on the works of art in the 2000s that were created by ‘yBa (young British artists)’ such as Marc Quinn and Damien Hirst who played a leading role in the contemporary installation art that appeared since the late 1980s.
