관광경험 연구의 ‘신체성’ 탐구를 위한 현상학의 가능성

국문 초록

이 논문은 이제까지 관광학 연구에서 등장한 현상학 연구에 대한 비판적 고찰을 토대로 현상학 연구의 공헌과 함께문제점들을 짚어 보고, 철학적·이론적 틀로서 현상학이 관광경험 연구에 어떠한 가능성과 잠재력을 제공할 수 있는지 탐색해보고자 하였다. 특히, Merleau-Ponty의 <지각의 현상학(Phénomenologie de la Perception)>에 나타난 신체 중심의 철학이향후 장애인의 신체성을 통해 투영되고 구성되는 여행경험을 기술할 때 보다 주체적인 관점의 인식론적 패러다임으로 적용될수 있는지 탐색해 보았다. 연구 결과 관광 문헌에 나타난 대부분의 현상학적 연구는 유럽의 현상학적 철학이나 인식론을 배경으로 담론을 형성하고 지면을 할애한 연구들보다는 미국의 실용주의 사상과 결합하여 등장한 현상학적 방법(론)의 활용 연구가주를 이루고 있다. 이에 관광경험의 이론과 담론 생성, 방법론의 명확한 사용을 위하여 현상학의 철학적, 이론적 토대가 연구될필요성이 제기된다. Merleau-Ponty의 신체의 현상학은 이제까지와는 다른 시각으로 ‘지각하는 신체’에 대해 강조하였고, 이러한 인식론은 여행과 삶을 경험하는 장애인의 신체와 주체성을 다른 관점에서 기술하고, 접근할 수 있는 유용한 대안이 될 수있음을 확인하였다. 물론, 이 연구에서 제시한 대안 역시 한계를 내재할 수 있으나, 향후 장애여성의 신체성이 여행경험에 어떠한의미를 가지는지, 어떻게 투영되는지 연구를 수행하기 위한 이론적 틀로서 다양한 담론과 이슈를 생성할 수 있으리라 기대한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to review the contributions and issues of phenomenological research that have so far emerged in tourism research and to explore what opportunities and potentials phenomenology as a philosophical and theoretical framework could provide to tourism experience research. Particularly when describing the travel experience projected and constructed through the embodiment of people with disabilities, the body-centered philosophy illustrated in Merleau-Ponty's is an epistemological paradigm with a more subjective perspective. Findings revealed that, as opposed to studies that formed discourse and were devoted to European phenomenological philosophy or epistemology, the majority of phenomenological studies in tourism literature use phenomenological methods that newly appeared in combination with American pragmatism. In order to develop the theory and discourse of the tourism experience and ensure proper application of the methodology, it is necessary to understand the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of phenomenology. The phenomenology and theory of Merleau-Ponty could be a useful substitute for describing and approaching the body and subjectivity of people with disabilities who view life and travel from a different angle. Despite the limitations of the alternatives discussed in this study, it is anticipated that a wide range of in-depth discourses and issues will emerge as a theoretical framework for investigating the significance of the physicality of women with disabilities in the travel experience and how it will be reflected in the ensuing research.
