국문 초록

이 글에서는 판소리가 공연 장르임을 염두에 두고 <흥부전>에 나타난 아이러니의 양상과 그 의의를 살펴 보고자 하였다. 그 결과 <흥부전>에서는 극적 아이러니와 사건의 아이러니 류의, 상황의 아이러니가 두드러짐을 알 수 있었다. 흥부가 남을 위한 선행은 잘하면서 자기 집은 수숫대로 허술하게 지어 낭패에 빠지는 대목에서는 상황을 제대로 파악하지 못하는 인물을 바라보는 청중의 극적 아이러니를 발견할 수 있었고, 매품을 팔아 가족들을 살려 보려 했으나 오히려 나라의 경사로 인해 실패하는 대목에서는 사건의 예견치 못한 변전을 통해 기대나 희망이 좌절되는 사건의 아이러니를 발견할 수 있었다. 또한 두 차례의 박 타는 대목을 통해서는 자신들의 애초 의도와 각각 어긋나는 결과를 초래하는 일을 스스로 행하고 있어 그에 따른 극적 아이러니가 발견되었다. 이러한 상황의 아이러니로부터 유발되는 웃음은 일차적으로는 인물에 대한 비판, 조소와 관련이 있으나, 그것은 또한 인물에 대한 동정과 사회 현실의 모순 인식으로까지 이어질 가능성이 높았다. 그 웃음은 차라리 이러한 이중적 정서 간의 긴장 속에서 나오는 것일 수 있다고 보았다. 아이러니는 이처럼 대상을 향한 입체적 정서, 인식과 맞물린다. 그러므로 <흥부전>, 나아가 판소리 작품에 있어 아이러니는, 현실 모순에 대한 판소리 나름대로의 대응 방식의 산물로서 공연 현장에서 이루어지는, 인간 삶에 대한 총체적 인식 방법이라 볼 수도 있을 것이다. 판소리 청중은 공연 현장에서 인물의 정서나 작중 정서뿐만 아니라 때로는 아이러니를 통해 현실의 문제까지 ‘체험적으로’ 인식했던 것이다.

영문 초록

This study purposed to examine the patterns of ironies in and their meanings on the assumption that Pansori is a performance genre. The results of this study showed that is characterized by situational ironies such as dramatic ironies and episodic ironies. Heungbu does good deeds for others but falls in trouble as he builds his house shabbily with millet stalks. In the character who does not figure out the situation, the audience sees a dramatic irony. In addition, Heungbu tries to support his family by receiving cudgels in place of an offender for payment, but his trial ends up in failure as all the criminals are pardoned on a national happy event. This shows an episodic irony that one’s expectation or hope is frustrated by an unanticipated change. Furthermore, in the two scenes of splitting gourds, the characters perform works that bring outcomes contrary to their initial intentions, and resultant dramatic ironies are discovered. Humors induced by these situational ironies are primarily related to the criticism and cynicism of the characters but, at the same time, they are highly likely to reach sympathy for the characters and the perception of contradictions in social realities. Rather, the humors may be the products of tension between the dualistic emotions. In this way, ironies gear with three‐dimensional emotion and perception toward objects. Therefore, ironies in and other Pansori works can be regarded as the way that Pansori copes with contradictions in realities and understands human life in general. That is, in the field of performance, Pansori audience perceived the nature of problems in realities not only through the characters’ sentiment and emotion but also ‘experientially’ through ironies.
