심청전에 나타난 추모의 양상과 의미

국문 초록

심청전의 이본군을 장자 계열(A), 장자부인 계열(B), 장승상부인 계열(C)로 구분했을 때, 기념비 건립은 장자부인 계열(B)에서부터 찾아볼 수 있다. 충효비나 타루비의 이름으로 건립된 기념비는 심청과 그의 죽음을 둘러싼 사건에 대한 도화동 사람들의 집단기억이 물질화된 것이다. 하지만 기념비의 건립이 심청을 위한 것인지, 심청의 죽음을 통한 효의 완성에 대한 것인지 혼란이 일어나면서 심청은 역설적으로 망각된다. 심청에 대한 기억은 점차 사라지고 심청의 죽음이 남긴 ‘효’만이 그 자리를 대체하게 된 것이다. 심봉사의 황성행을 통해 망각되었던 심청에 대한 기억이 소환된다. 심청에 대한 기억은 심봉사의 삶에 활력을 불어넣으며 새로운 삶의 주체로 성장시킨다. 물론, 심봉사는 황후 앞에 섰을 때 죄의식을 전면에 드러내며 자신을 죽여 달라는 마지막 절규를 통해 ‘황성’이라는 공간을 심청에 대한 ‘기억의 터’로 자리 잡게 한다. 기념비에 새겨진 집단 폭력과 기억은 해체되고, 온전한 추모를 바탕으로 비로소 효는 완성된다. 심청전은 효에 대한 이야기지만 동시에 추모에 대한 이야기라는 사실을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article aims to analyze the features of commemoration and its meaning in the Shimcheong Jeon. Since oblivion is a part of memory, possibly it is the mechanism between remembering and forgetting that leads the narrative of Shimcheong Jeon to form a story of filial piety. Therefore, focusing on the aspects of commemoration could be a vital method for understanding Shimcheong Jeon. In the text, commemoration is reflected in a movement to erect a monument to Shim Cheong called the Chunghyo-bi or Taru-bi. The monument is the materialization of collective memories of the people of Dohwadong. However, the purpose of the monument because it is very difficult to understand whether it is meant to remember Shim Cheong or the filial piety represented by her death. After the monument is erected, Shim Cheong is gradually forgotten, and her memory is replaced by the concept of filial piety. The memory of Shim Cheong the narrative of Shim Bongsa’s travel to Hwangsung. This memory makes Shim Bongsa, and when he stands before the empress, he expresses his feelings of guilt. His weeping makes Hwangsung a Shim Cheong. Finally, the collective violence to Shim Cheong is dissolved and the commemoration is completed. Thus, Shimcheong Jeon is not only the story of a dutiful daughter but also that of a commemoration.
