한국의 문화자본 연구에 대한 비판적 고찰

국문 초록

한국 사회에서의 문화자본 관련 연구들을 살펴보면, 문화자본에 대한 개념화·조작화 단계에서부터 선행연구들 사이에 차이가 있다는 것을 발견할 수 있다. 문화자본 개념에는 필연적으로 ‘계급’이라는 요소가 포함되어 있지만, 많은 연구들에서 문화자본의계급적 요소를 간과하고 이를 단순히 문화예술활동 횟수나 경험 유무로 문화자본을 측정하고 분석하고자 하는 것을 찾아볼 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 문헌조사를 통해 문화자본에 관한 선행연구들을 주요 쟁점별로 정리하고, 선행연구들의 주요 연구내용과 공헌점을 살핌과 동시에 기존 연구들의 한계점을 밝혔으며, 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 통해 미래의 한국 사회 문화자본 연구의 방향성을 제시하고자 하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 계급과 계층을 구분하여 사용하되 이 두 개념의 상관관계를 고려해야 한다. 계급과 계층은 서로 상반되는 개념이기 보다는 개인이 자신이속한 사회에서 스스로의 위치를 가늠하는 척도로 동시에 사용되기 때문이다. 둘째, 현대 사회에서 부르디외식의 문화자본과 옴니보어의 기능에 대한 고민이 필요하다. 이는최근 SNS의 게시물을 통해 자신의 취향과 소비를 과시하는 문화가 발달한 한국 사회에서 더욱 필요한 고민이라고 사료된다. 서론에서 제시했던 기존 연구들 간의 상이한결과는 위의 두 가지 문제점으로부터 기인한 것으로 보인다. 이는 각각의 개념에 대한이해를 바탕으로 각각의 메커니즘이 사회에서 적용될 수 있는 가능성을 폭넓게 고민해야 함과 동시에 각 개념의 측정을 더 적확하게 해야 함을 시사한다. 그러므로 셋째, 문화자본의 적절한 측정 방식에 대한 고민은 매우 중요하다. 마지막으로 한국 사회의 문화자본에 대한 메커니즘을 이해할 수 있도록 취향과 실제 소비에 대한 구분뿐만 아니라 실제 취향과 보여주기 위한 취향을 구분하는 연구조사와 한국의 문화자본 지형을살펴볼 수 있도록 관련 패널데이터 구축과 같은 긴 호흡의 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구는취향과 계층, 계층 재생산, 문화예술경험의 효과 측면에서 사회학, 교육학, 문화예술학분야의 선행연구들을 비판적으로 고찰하여 기존 연구들의 문제점을 다루고, 향후 연구방향을 위한 시사점을 이끌어냈다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.

영문 초록

Research concerned with cultural capital in Korean society demonstrate differences ranging from the stage of conceptualization to the operation of cultural capital. Although the concept of cultural capital inevitably includes the element of 'class', a number of studies overlook the class factor of cultural capital and simply measure and analyze cultural capital based on the number of cultural and artistic activities or experiences. Therefore, with the above problem in mind, this study critically review the existing literature in and around cultural capital by closely examining the main research findings and the limitations. We then make suggestions for future research including the direction of cultural capital studies in Korean society. To begin with, class and class should be used separately, but the correlation between these two concepts should be considered. This is because class and class, rather than opposing concepts, are used together as a measure of individuals' position in their society. Secondly, it is necessary to consider the method of measuring cultural capital and the method of hierarchical existence between genres. Thirdly, it is necessary to consider a new methodology for measuring cultural capital suitable for Korean society and how it works. Lastly, in order to understand the mechanism of cultural capital in Korean society, long-term, in-depth research by building related panel data should be conducted to analyze the landscape of Korean cultural capital. This study is meaningful in that it critically reviews the existing literature in cultural capital in the fields of sociology, cultural sociology, cultural economics and arts management and provide future research directions in terms of taste, class reproduction, and cultural and artistic experience.
