근세 후기 문적 사원과 막부 권력의 관계

국문 초록

일본 근세의 문적 사원은 새롭게 들어선 에도 막부가 추구한 권위의 신성성을 뒷받침하는 존재이자, 동시에 권력이 통제 대상으로 삼은 종교 세력의 정점에 있는 세력이었다. 본고는 이들 문적 사원이 운영한 대부 금융을 중심으로 근세 후기 문적 사원과 에도 막부의 관계를 고찰한 것이다. 文政 2년(1819) 막부는 권력의 보호를 받는 명목금 대부의 전제 조건으로 막부에 대부 내역을 보고해야 한다는 원칙을 내세웠다. 그러나 에도의 지샤부교가 담당하는 유력 문적 사원의 명목금 대부는 이러한 흐름과는 무관하게 관례대로 보호받았다. 하지만 文政 5년을 기점으로 이들 문적 사원의 명목금 대부 역시 예외 없는 원칙의 적용을 선고받으며 명목금 대부에 대한 지샤부교의 조사가 시작되었다. 문제는 조사 중 연체된 대부금에 대한 지샤부교의 개입이 중단된 데서 발생했다. 조사의 장기화는 해당 금융에 관한 막부의 보호가 장기간 중단되는 결과를 낳았다. 이는 문적 사원이 연체된 대부금 문제의 해결을 지샤부교에게 요구하는 집단적인 움직임으로 이어졌다. 이들 문적 사원은 막부 권력의 개입 없이는 대부의 안정적인 운영은 사실상 불가능하다고 인식하고 있었다. 근세 후기 문적 사원의 막부 권력으로의 종속은 이전과 다른 이유에서 깊어지고 있었으며, 그 중심에는 막부의 보호를 바탕으로 성장한 이들 문적 사원의 명목금 대부가 자리하고 있었다. 이는 당시 문적 사원의 재정 운영에서 중요한 위치를 차지하게 된 대부 사업이 막부의 도움 없이는 더 이상 그 안정적인 운영을 담보할 수 없다는 문적 사원의 현실 인식과도 관련 깊다. 근세 후기 문적 사원과 막부의 관계는 이제는 막부의 필요가 아니라 사원 측의 경제적 이해에서 공고해지고 있었던 것이다.

영문 초록

The monzeki temple was an existence that supported the sacredness of the Tokugawa shogunate. At the same time, it was the religious force that the shogunate wanted to control. This paper examines the relationship between the monzeki temple and the Tokugawa shogunate in the late Edo period, based on the loan finance (myōmoku-kin loan) operated by the temple. In 1819, the shogunate put forward the principle that the details of myōmoku-kin loan should be reported to the shogunate as a prerequisite for the loan protected by the power. Regardless of this trend, some of the monzeki temple’s loan were still unconditionally protected by the power. However, they will soon be sentenced to the application of the principle without exception. At the same time, investigation was conducted on the loan. The problem arose when the shogunate's protection of the loan was suspended during the investigation. As a result, there were collective movements of the monzseki temple that the shogunate must resume suspended protection. The temple at the time recognized that the protection of the shogunate was essential for stable operation of the loan. In the late Edo period, relationship between the monzeki temple and the Tokugawa shogunate was deepening for different reason than before. There is the perception of the monzeki temple that the loan business can no longer guarantee its stable operation without the power. The relationship between the monzeki temple and the shogunate was solidified not by the need of the shogunate, but by the the need of the temple.
