조선 후기 여훈서의 아내 윤리와 ‘아내-주체’ 구성의 가능성

국문 초록

본고는 조선 후기 여성이 스스로 마련한 주체화의 계기를 규명하는 것을 목표로 조선 후기 여성이 맺었던 관계들 중, 주체적 의지를 발휘할 수 있는 여지가 가장 크다고 판단되는 부부관계에서의 ‘아내’에 주목했다. 예속적 주체구성 이론에 기반하여 그 예속 조건에 대한 이해가 선결될 필요가 있는바, 『예기』와 『소학』의 아내 윤리, 그리고 조선 후기 사대부 여훈서의 아내 윤리를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 의복과 음식을 기본으로 하는 기능적 역할 수행, 분별 있고 공경하는 태도로 남편 섬기기, 남편에 대한 온유한 간언과 책선으로 구성된 아내 윤리를 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 이러한 규제적 실천이 그 대상인 여성들에게 미친 영향을 고찰할 수 있는 사례로써, 조선 후기 여성 김삼의당이 주어진 윤리 규범을 선택적으로 수용함으로써 ‘아내-주체’를 수행하는 양상을 실증해 보았다. 삼의당은 ‘아내-며느리’로 자신을 규정함과 동시에 『예기』와 『소학』, 조선 후기 여훈서의 아내 윤리가 제시하는 가정 내의 기능적 의무를 스스로의 역할로 정립한다. 그리고 남편을 공경으로 섬기면서 간언과 책선을 도외시하지 않는 ‘아내-주체’를 수행한다. 다만 실제 남편에게 보낸 편지에서 알 수 있듯이 삼의당의 경우 간언에 있어 온유한 태도를 유지하라는 조선 후기 여훈서의 아내 윤리는 수용하지 않았고, 이것은 조선 후기 젠더규범이 갖는 이상과 실제의 균열을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to identify the opportunity of subjectivization prepared by women in the late Joseon Dynasty. Among the relationships women had in the late Joseon Dynasty, I paid attention to the ‘wife’ in the marital relationship, which was judged to have the most room to exercise independent will. Based on the theory of subordination agent composition, it is necessary to understand the subordination condition. The wife ethics of 『Yeki(禮記)』, 『Sohak(小學)』, and the wife ethics of Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書) were examined. As a result, it was possible to confirm the wife's ethics, which consisted of performing functional roles based on clothing and food, serving her husband with a sensible and respectful attitude, and tender admonitions and exhortations to her husband. And as an example to consider the impact of these regulatory practices on women, we demonstrated how Kim Samuidang(金三宜堂) in the late Joseon Dynasty selectively accepted the given ethical norms and practiced the role of ‘wife-subject’. She defines herself as a ‘wife-daughter-in-law’ and at the same time establishes the functional duties within the family suggested by the wife ethics in 『Yeki(禮記)』, 『Sohak(小學)』, and Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書) as her own role. However, as can be seen from the letter sent to her actual husband, she did not accept Yeo Hun-seo's wife ethics in the late Joseon Dynasty to maintain a meek attitude in remonstrating. This shows the crack between the ideal and the reality of gender norms in the late Joseon Dynasty.
