국문 초록

본 연구는 맞벌이 부모의 COVID-19 팬데믹 시기 경험이 자녀의 초등 전이 경험과 교차하는 지점을 탐구함으로써 위기 상황에서 초등 전이 과정의 적응에 조력할 수 있는 구체적인 대안을 찾고자 하였다. 2020년에 학령기로 전이한 자녀를 둔 맞벌이 부모를 대상으로 유관 온라인 커뮤니티에 연구 소개문을 게시하는 한편, 눈덩이 표집을 활용하여 참여자를 모집하였으며, 그 결과 2021년 5월부터 8월까지 총 10명(5쌍)의 부모가 각각 개별적으로 비대면 인터뷰에 응하였다. 질적연구 방법인 현상학적 연구 틀을 적용하여 이들 경험의 본질적 구성 요소를 도출한 결과, 팬데믹 시기에 초등학교에 입학한 자녀를 둔 맞벌이 부모의 양육 경험은 예측할 수 없는 길 위를 운전하며 동지가 되어 우회로를 찾아 헤매는 과정으로 구조화할 수 있었다. 연구 참여자들은 COVID-19 감염 확산으로 예상한 길이 닫히자 임시방편으로 대처하며계획을 수정해야 했다. 이때 학령기 자녀 생활의 중요한 축을 맡는 기관인 학교가 안정적인역할을 못하게 되자 부모는 자체적으로 자녀를 ‘돌봄’과 동시에 ‘교육’하며 가족 단위에서 취할 수 있는 자원에 기반하여 개별 전략을 수립해야 했다. 연구 참여자가 처한 일터 맥락의 가족친화제도와 가용 자원에 따라 구체적인 양상이 조금씩 달랐지만, 어머니가 ‘콘트롤타워’ 역할을 하면 아버지가 ‘백업’하며 온 가족이 가용 자원을 활용하여 함께 길을 찾고자 하였다. 본연구 결과는 사회적 거리두기가 강하게 실시된 위기 상황에서 가정으로 일임된 초등 전이 자녀의 교육 및 양육이 맞벌이 부모의 일터와 자녀의 학교 등 가족을 둘러싼 생태체계적 맥락과긴밀하게 상호작용하고 있었음을 확인하며, 유사시를 대비하여 기업의 가족친화제도의 보완및 강화와 지역사회 내 가정과 학교 간 체계적 소통 체계 마련의 필요성을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This study explored the experience of dual-earner parents whose children entered elementary school during the COVID-19 pandemic. Five couples with children who entered elementary school in 2020 were recruited through internet websites and word-of-mouth communication. In-depth interviews with these parents were conducted and analyzed from a phenomenological point of view. The parents’ experiences can be summarized as figuring out detours while navigating an unpredictable journey. In addition to fulfilling their regular obligations, the parents had to support their children with limited guidance from their schools. While experiences varied by family, parents’ roles were often gendered: the mother was in charge and the father provided support. Overall, the father and mother worked well together, prioritizing taking care of their children and adjusting their schedules accordingly. It was crucial that parents altered their work schedules. Parents who took advantage of family-friendly policies during the pandemic, such as flexible work shifts, telecommuting, and family care leave, reported feeling less stressed. These results indicate that the place taking care of children cannot be limited to the house where parents and their children live, even during emergencies with strict social distancing policies. The ecological context of each family, such as a parent’s workplace and the child’s school, should be jointly considered when the countermeasures for helping parents and their children are planned and implemented.
