국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 붓다의 교설로부터 공리주의에 가해지는 비판에 대한 보완점을 찾아보고 불교의 존재론이 결과주의를 지향하는 도덕적 담지자를 함의 할 수 있는지의 여부를 구명해 보는 것이다. 공리주의 가치의 몰 개인성 비판에 대응한 파핏(Derek Parfit)논변의 요지는 인격 동일성의 기준을 일종의 연속성으로 간주하여 자기이익(self-interest)을 무화시키고 심리적 환원주의를 택하는 것이었다. 환원주의는 다수를 향한 가치 실현의 주체로서 이타주의적 관심사를 결과론적으로 정당화 시킬 수 있는 논리적 강점을 지니지만 행위 책임의 귀속 지점에 대한 불분명함의 문제 그리고 미래경험과 책임의 잠재력을 제거함으로서 공리주의 기반을 약화시킨다는 비판 역시 산재한다. 이에 반하여 12연기를 비선형으로 인식하는 입장에서 정의 하는 인격의 함의는 동일성을 배제한다는 점에서 유사한 맥락을 확인 할 수 있으나 상호의존연기에 내재된 차연성과 동시성은 행위와 결과 책임에 대한 명백한 귀속지점을 제공한다. 따라서 환원주의와 비선형 연기에서 인식하는 인격의 연속성을 담보하는 매개의 근거를 고찰해보는 과정을 통하여 양자의 입장에서 드러나는 윤리적 정합성의 차이를 파악 해볼 것이다. 이는 환원주의가 해결하지 못했던 난제들의 해소방안을 연기의 교설을 통하여 논의해 봄으로서 무아의 존재론이 현대의 결과주의 윤리이론 안에서도 유효함을 드러내 줄 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to supplement the criticisms of utilitarianism from the Buddha’s teachings and to explore whether Buddhist ontology can imply a consequentialist moral bearer. The gist of Derek Parfit’s argument in response to the impersonality critique of utilitarian values was to treat the criterion of personal identity as a kind of continuum, neutralizing self-interest in favor of psychological reductionism. Reductionism has the logical strength of providing a consequentialist justification of altruistic concerns as agents of value realization for the greater good. However, it is also criticized for being unclear about the point of attribution of responsibility for actions and for weakening the foundations of utilitarianism by eliminating the potential for future experience and responsibility. Meanwhile, the implications of personal identity as defined by a nonlinear perception of the twelve links of dependent arising can be seen in a similar vein in that they exclude sameness, but the idappaccayatā and simultaneity inherent in interdependent arising provide a clear point of attribution for responsibility for acts and consequences. Therefore, by examining the mediating grounds that ensure the continuity of personal identity as perceived in reductionism and nonlinear dependent arising, we identify the differences in ethical compatibility that emerge from the two positions. Through a discussion of the problems that reductionism has failed to solve via the doctrine of dependent co-arising, this paper show that the ontology of anātman is valid within contemporary consequentialist ethical theory.
