영산강유역 방대형 분구상(墳丘狀) 성토물의 사회적 의미

국문 초록

이 글은 5세기 중엽~6세기 전엽에 조성된 영산강유역 방대형 분구상 성토물의 사회적 의미를 검토한 연구이다. 필자는 기존의 방대형 고총고분 자료 가운데 중심매장시설을 갖추지 않는 경우를 ‘方臺形 墳丘狀 盛土物’로 규정하였다. 검토 결과, 방대형 분구상 성토물이 갖는 사회적 의미는 6가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 방대형 분구상 성토물은 고총 성행기의 서막부터 종말까지 연속된 유일의 토목 축조물이다. 둘째, 성토물에 반영된 신기술 등은 물질자료뿐만 아니라 사고·관념체계에도 새로움을 이식시켰으며, 이와 관련된 고고자료 중 하나가 방대형 분구상 성토물의 완성이었다. 셋째, 방대형 분구는 주로 무덤 용도로 이용되지만, 일부는 기념물 용도로 이용되기도 하였다. 넷째, 입면적 형태는 원대형도 일부 확인되나, 단연 방대형이 압도적으로 선호되었다. 다섯째, 방대형 분구상 성토물은 고총고분과 형태·규모·기술적으로 상호 간 많은 유사성이 확인되었다. 여섯째, 마감시점은 최절정에 달하던 고총고분의 축조 정지, 전용옹관 제작의 종언 등 최소한의 신분 표상의 지표들이 사라지는 시점과 일치되고 있다. 이상으로 볼 때 방대형 분구상 성토물은 고총고분의 출현과 마감을 같이하는 유일한 성토물로서 당대 사회 전반을 대표하는 인문적 경관으로 자리매김하였고, 영산강유역 전역에 걸쳐 유행하였다. 그 용도는 주로 무덤으로 이용되면서 권력과 지배의 당위성을 표현하는 기념물로 인식되었고, 때로는 축조 세력의 묘역 속에 자리하여 집단의 안녕과 사회 통합을 유도하였다. 다만, 이미 고정화된 방대형 고총고분의 분구 축조공정을 그대로 이용한 것으로 보아 ‘이원적 지시대상(무덤+기념물)’인 고분의 형(形)에 기반함을 알 수 있었다. 방대형 일색으로 무덤에서 기념물까지 표현한 것은 특정 형태가 갖는 일종의 사회적 메시지로 해석된다. 대외적으로는 선진의 백제와 연결되어 권력의 정당화 및 정치적 결속력 강화를 표출하는 상징적 지표로 선택했던 것으로 보인다. 고분 연구는 유존하는 소재로 다뤄지는 경향이 있지만, 본질적인 이해를 위해서는 사망에서 제사까지의 전 과정을 고려한 상·장제 및 묘역 경관에 대한 연구가 병행되어야 한다. 우리에게 고분으로 인지된 성토물은 그 안에 깃든 정신문화적인 배경이 있음을 이해할 필요가 있다. 이 글의 연구 대상인 방대형 분구상 성토물 또한 이러한 시각으로 접근할 때 그 영역에 한걸음 더 가까워질 것으로 기대한다.

영문 초록

This article examines the social meaning of squarish platform tomb in the Yeongsangang River basin, which was built from the mid-5th century to the 6th century. The author defined the absence of tomb facilities among the square platform tombs as a ‘mound-shaped embankment'. As a result of the review, there are six types. First, it's the only mound-shaped embankment that runs from the beginning to the end of the period when tombs flourished. Second, new technologies have affected accidents and even accidents, and one of the related archaeological data is the completion of the squarish platform tomb. Third, its use was also used as a tomb, and some were built as monuments. Fourth, the form is identified by a small number of circles, and the square is overwhelmingly preferred. Fifth, mound-shaped embankment is similar to a tomb in shape, size, and technology. Sixth, it coincides with the disappearance of the indicators of status by stopping the construction of the tomb and stopping the big jar-coffin at this time. From the above perspective, mound-shaped embankmen was used at all times and became a representative tomb landscape, and was popular throughout the yeongsangang River basin. Its use was mainly used as a graveyard, expressing legitimacy for power and domination, and sometimesled to the well-being of groups and social integration. However, in the case of monuments, it was found that they were made in the form of‘two-way indicators(grave+monument)’ using a certain squarish shape. The representation of the tomb on the tombstone in the form of a square can be seen as a kind of social symbolism. Externally, it was chosen as a symbolic means of justifying power and strengthening political solidarity in connection with Baekje. The study of ancient tombs is studied through materials, but studies of ancestral rites, funerals, and cemetery landscapes should also be considered. What we perceive as tombs is that we need to understand the spiritual and cultural nature contained within them. The research topic of this article, mound-shaped embankment, is also expected to take a step closer to the field of mental culture when studying from this point of view.
