비 개념에 대한 교육적 분석

지금까지 우리나라에서 사용했던 여러 교과서에서 비 개념이 어떻게 지도되었는지를 알아본 결과, 어느 시기의 교육과정에서나 비의 표현 방법에 비추어 비를 도입하고 있는 점이 특징임을 알 수 있다. 그러나 그 이면에는 두 크기를 덧셈적인 관점에서가 아니라 곱셈적인 관점에서 상대적인 크기를 비교하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 곱셈적인 관점에서의 비교는 어떤 상황, 맥락에서 그것을 조직하는 수단으로 비라는 관점을 택하는 안목을 갖게 될 때 진정으로 학습자에게 내면화된 상태라고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 그런데 지금까지의 교과서에서 다루고 있는 비는 Thomson(1994)이 구분한 여러 수준의 비 가운데 특별한 고정된 두 양 사이에 존재하는 곱셈적 관계를 인지하는 비의 초보적 수준이다. 이런 수준에서의 비는 두 고정된 양을 곱셈적 관계로 보는 것이며 그것이 어떤 조직의 의미로 이 상황을 조직하는지에 대한 비례적 관점, 안목을 갖게 하지는 못한다. Thomson이 구분한 비 가운데 내면화된 비의 의미는 비례식을 다루는 가운데 획득할 수 있을 것이다. 그런데 우리나라의 교과서에서 비례식은 앞 상태에서 기준량과 비교하는 양의 비의 값이 다음 상태에서 기준량과 비교하는 양의 비의 값과 같다는 방식으로 도입되고 있다. 예를 들면, 제7차 교육과정에 의한 교과서에서 비례식을 도입하는 부분을 살펴보자.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the essence of ratio concept from educational viewpoint. For this purpose, it was tried to examine contents and organizations of the recent teaching of ratio concept in elem- entary school text of Korea from 'Syllabus Period' to 'the 7th Curriculum Period'. In these text most ratio problems were num- erically and algorithmically approached. So the Wiskobas programme was introduced, in which the focal point was not on math- ematics as a closed system but on the activity, on the process of mathematization and the subject 'ratio' was assigned an important place. There are some educational implications of this study which needs to be mentioned. First, the programme for developing proportional reasoning should be intr- oduced early. Many students have a subst- antial amount of prior knowledge of propor- tional reasoning. Second, conventional symbol and algorithmic method should be introduced after students have had the opportunity to go through many experiences in intuitive and conceptual way. Third, context problems and real-life situations should be required both to constitute and to apply ratio concept. While working on context problems the students can develop proportional reasoning and understanding. Fourth, In order to assist student's lea- rning process of ratio concept, visual models have to recommend to use.
