유럽에서 11세기 중반부터 시작된 ‘교회적 지성’과 ‘세속적 지성’의 분리·분화 과정에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 교회와 사회가 삶을 공유하면서 각자의 고유한 정신과 문화를 키워왔다는 관점에서 11세기 중반부터 후반까지 유럽의 교회 내에서 발생한 지성 논쟁과 그 의미를 탐구한다. 필자는 두 가지 지성 논쟁, 베렌가리우스와 란프랑쿠스의 제2차 성찬례 논쟁과 로스켈리누스와 안셀무스의 보편 논쟁 및 삼위일체 논쟁을 살펴보고, 두 논쟁을 통해 어떤 지성이 성장했는지 고찰한다. 이를 위해 필자는 이 지성 논쟁에 가담한 이들이 작성한 일차 사료를 검토하였다. 여기서 필자는 논자들의 진술을 바탕으로 논쟁에 가담한 양측이 말하는 지성이 서로 다른 지성이라는 것을 밝혀내고, 두 가지 지성을 신앙에 근거한 ‘신앙적 지성’ 혹은 ‘영적인 지성’과 변증론에 근거한 ‘이성적 지성’ 혹은 ‘세속적 지성’으로 구분하였다. 또한 필자는 두 차례의 지성 논쟁이 불러온 새로운 변화를 지성의 성장이라는 관점에서 고찰하였다. 결론적으로 본 논문은 11세기의 두 지성 논쟁을 교회의 일치된 신앙을 분열시킨 무의미하고 해로운 싸움이 아니라, 교회 내에 하나로 통합되어 있던 지성이 신앙적 지성과 이성적 지성으로 분리되고 분화되며 동반 성장하는 데에 필요했던 과정으로 평가한다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the intellectual controversies that occurred within the European church from the middle to the late 11th century and its meaning from the viewpoint that the church and society have shared their life and developed their own unique spirit and culture. This paper examines the two intellectual controversies, the Second Eucharistic Controversy between Berengarius and Lanfrancus, and the Universal and Trinitarian Controversies between Roscelinus and Anselmus, and studies what kind of intellect grew through these two controversies. To this aim, I examined the primary sources written by those involved in these intellectual controversies. Here, based on the statements of the writers, I found out that the intellect of the two sides participating in the controversies are different intellect, and classify the two intellect as ‘christian intellect’ or ‘spiritual intellect’ based on faith and ‘rational intellect’ or ‘earthly intellect’ based on apologetics. In addition, I considered the new changes brought about by the two intellectual controversies from the point of view of the growth of intellect. In conclusion, this paper evaluates two intellectual controversies not as a meaningless and harmful fight that split the unified faith of the church, but as the necessary process for the separation, differentiation, and mutual growth of intellect, which was integrated within the church.
