영화 ≪그린 북≫, ≪기생충≫, ≪두 교황≫에 나타나는 해석적 단초로서의 대립

국문 초록

본 논문은 영화에 나타나는 대립적 요소들에 대한 음악의 효과적인 역할을 살펴보는 데에 그목적이 있다. 세 영화 ≪그린 북≫, ≪기생충≫, 그리고 ≪두 교황≫ 각각 흑백의 갈등, 빈부의갈등 그리고 신구의 갈등에 대하여 다루고 있다. 필자는 해석학적 음악분석을 바탕으로 음악이영화에 나타나는 대립적 요소들과 어떻게 조응하여 의미를 강화하는지 밝히고자 하였다. ≪그린 북≫에서 다루고 있는 흑백의 갈등은 백인들의 클래식 음악 문화에 대한 독점으로 확장되며, 그 독점에 도전하는 흑인 연주가 돈 셜리로 인하여 흑백 갈등은 고조되어간다. 본 논문에서 활용된 ≪아라베스크≫와 해당 장면은 영화에서 조성과 선법성의 대립을 활용하여 흑인, 클래식 음악 문화 그리고 돈 셜리만의 음악과 미키마우징 수준의 일치성을 완성하며 관객의 몰입을 돕는다. ≪기생충≫의 배경음악인 ‘믿음의 벨트’는 바로크풍의 음악이지만 비(非) 바로크적요소가 음악 곳곳에 난입함으로써 정체성의 미묘한 혼란을 유도한다. 이 미묘하고 유사품 같은정체성은 영화의 인물들이 만들어낸 가짜 정체성과 효과적으로 조응한다. 마지막으로 신구의 대립을 다루고 있는 ≪두 교황≫은 그레고리 성가와 현대의 대중음악의 충돌을 활용하여 보수와진보를 상징하는 두 교황의 대립을 그려내고 있다.

영문 초록

The goal of this paper is to explore film music’s efficient role in the recent selective films in which multiple levels of binary opposition serve as a crucial function. The films Green Book and Parasite take the opposition between the black and white and between the poor and rich as a structural element whereas The Two Popes deals with subtle conflict between the conservative and progressive in Catholics. I tried to elucidate how music reinforces meaning by mapping the opposite elements with each other from a humanistic point of view, particularly hermeneutics and narrative theory. An opposition between the black and white in Green Book maps into the opposition between Don Shirley’s popular music and the white’s classic music. Debussy’s Arabesque diegetically used in a dialogue scene leads to a quasi mickey-mousing like synchronization, helps one get indulged in the film, and then accomplishes high-degree tranvaluation of meaning. The Belt of Faith as nondiegetic music in Parasite obviously arouses the Baroque style and mood, but finally leads to a chaos of identity by allowing for pseudo Baroque elements. The Two Popes portrays the opposition between the two Popes, symbolizing the conservative and progressive, by contrasting the medieval Gregorian chant and contemporary popular music.
