국문 초록

세르게이 라흐마니노프의 ≪파가니니 주제에 의한 랩소디≫(1934)는 그 제목 자체에서 이미차용의 출처를 명백하게 밝히고 있으며 그것은 잘 알려진 파가니니의 ≪카프리스 24번 A단조≫이다. 하지만 이 글은 파가니니와 라흐마니노프의 관계에 대한 종래의 연구 방향을 전환하여 리스트와 라흐마니노프의 관계에 주목한다. 필자의 분석 결과 라흐마니노프의 랩소디는 리스트의 비르투오소 변주곡인 ≪파가니니 에튜드 6번≫와 ≪죽음의 춤≫에 대한 암시와 참고로 풍부하다. 피터 버콜더가 체계적으로 발전시킨 음악차용의 분야와 방법론을 응용하며, 필자는 라흐마니노프와 리스트의 관계를 크게 세 가지 증거의 범주에서 조명한다. (1) 정황적⋅역사적 증거에서모델이 되는 리스트의 작품들과 라흐마니노프의 관계를 공고히 한다. (2) 분석적⋅해석적 증거에서 라흐마니노프가 리스트의 작품들에서 어떠한 음악재료를 선택하고 사용했는지 구체적 사례를 통해 탐구한다. (3) 차용된 재료의 기능과 목적에 대한 미학적 증거를 밝히며, 20세기 초 모더니즘의 맥락에서 리스트의 비르투오소 전통을 계승하는 라흐마니노프를 조명한다. 결국 (1)-(3) 의 논의는 라흐마니노프가 리스트 작품들을 참고하며 전통적 장르와 스타일을 공부, 모방, 재해석한 방식을 드러내며, 그의 선배 비르투오소 피아니스트-작곡가인 리스트에게 존경을 표하는동시에 모더니스트의 고유한 방식을 제시한 점을 보여준다.

영문 초록

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini(1934) pronounces its borrowing overtly in its very title: the last of Paganini’s 24 Caprices for solo violin in A minor. Yet this article reorients the previous focus on Rachmaninoff’s engagement with the Paganini associations toward his alignment with the tradition of Liszt, his virtuoso pianist– composer predecessor. The rhapsody is indeed abundant in allusions and references to two composition by Liszt in the same genre, virtuosic variations: his Grandes Études de Paganini No. 6 and Totentanz. Adapting the methodology of musical borrowing as a field that has been developed by J. Peter Burkholder, this article elucidates the relationship between the Rhapsody and his Liszt models largely in three categories of evidence: (1) the biographical and historical circumstances to deepen Rachmaninoff’s connections to his Liszt models, (2) interpretative and critical questions about the analytical evidence, investigating how Rachmaninoff uses and treats the existing material; and (3) the function and meaning of the borrowed material in Rachmaninoff’s versions and the aesthetic purposes of his reworking. All three aspects of the discussion demonstrate how Liszt’s features, ideas, and technique provided a means for Rachmaninoff to learn and emulate traditional styles and genres, paying homage to his fellow virtuoso pianist–composer and opening up a new direction for his engagement with the Liszt tradition in relation to modernism.
