과제 복잡성과 학습자의 인지적 요인 연구

국문 초록

목적: 본고에서는 과제 복잡성이 한국어 고급 학습자 발화의 복잡성과 정확성, 유창성에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고, 작업기억이 과제 복잡성과 제2언어 수행 간의 관계를 어떻게 중재하는지를 살펴본다. 방법: 이를 위해 총 30명의 고급 학습자(단순 과제 집단: 14명, 복잡 과제 집단: 16명)와 18명의 모어 화자(단순 과제 집단: 9명, 복잡 과제 집단: 9명)가 두 개의 과제를 수행하였다. 하나는 ‘+/-적은 요소’ 변수가 적용된 문제 해결하기 과제이며, 다른 하나는 ‘+/-인과관계 추론’ 변수가 적용된 그림 서술하기 과제였다. 학습자의 작업 기억은 음운기억, 시각기억, 공간기억을 측정하였다. 결과: 첫째, 한국어 모어 화자는 문제 해결하기와 그림 서술하기의 단순한 과제에서 복잡성과 유창성이 높았으며, 한국어 고급 학습자는 과제의 유형과 방식에 따라 상이한 결과를 보였다. 둘째, 한국어 모어 화자와 한국어 고급 학습자는 그림 보고 서술하기(정리 발화)의 단순한 과제에서 작업기억이 높은 학습자의 구어 복잡성이 증가하였다. 결론: 과제 복잡성과 학습자의 인지적 요인이 제2언어 수행에 영향을 미친다는 것을 확인함으로써 과제 복잡성이 교수요목 설계 시 과제 선정과 배열 문제에 있어 교육적 함의를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Purpose: This study explored the impact of task complexity on the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of advanced Korean language learners. It also investigated how working memory mediated the influence of task complexity on language performance. Methods: In order to accomplish this research purpose, a total of thirty advanced Korean language learners(14 in the simple task group vs 16 in the complex task group) and eighteen Korean native speakers(9 in the simple task group vs 9 in the complex task group) performed two kinds of tasks. One is problem-solving tasks, which were different in task complexity along [+/- few elements] and the other is picture description tasks, which were different in task complexity along [+/-causal reasoning] dimensions. Working memory capacity was measured by phonological, visual and spatial memory tests. Results: The results first revealed that for Korean native speakers, task complexity led to a decrease in complexity and accuracy in the complex tasks, but for advanced Korean language learners, results varied depending on the type and method of the task. Secondly, this study found that working memory correlated with complexity in second performance of the simple picture description tasks for both groups. Conclusion: Results suggest that factors related to task complexity and cognitive individual differences can play a different role in L2 performance. These results might be of pedagogical significance for task selection and sequencing in syllabus design.
