1920년대 잡지의 문학 담론과 ‘고전(古典)’의 좌표

국문 초록

1920년대 『개벽』의 고전(적)은 문학 및 학술 관련 기사, 답사기나 보고서, 기행문 등 다양한 텍스트에서 인용되며, 독서물로도 수록되어 있다. 그러나 본격적인 고전문학론을 다룬 기사는 드물며, '고전'은 문학 담론 안에서 근대문학 및 세계문학 양식의 비교 대상으로 언급되거나, 전통문화, 민족문학의 관점에서 인식되는 경향이 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 당대 『개벽』의 문학 담론 안팎의 고전(적)의 문맥과 위상을 검토하였다. 이를 위해 브랫(brat) 프로그램으로 주요 문학 담론 및 고전(적)이 포함된 선별 기사의 개념어를 항목별로 분류하고 계량화한 후 의미망을 분석하였다. 2장에서는 선별 기사에서 구축된 전체적인 코퍼스를 조망하고, 문학용어의 출현 빈도, 공기어 분포 및 네트워크 등을 분석하며 문학 담론의 구도를 살폈다. 3장에서는 고전(적)의 언급 및 인용 양상에 대한 통계 정보를 토대로, 한시, 시조 등 ‘고전(적)’의 지형과 문맥을 구체적으로 검토하였다. 이를 통해 1920년대 『개벽』의 ‘고전(적)’은 한문 문헌이 다수를 차지한다는 점을 확인하였다. 또한 새로운 문학과 문단, 문인의 역할을 고민하는 당대 문학 담론 안팎에서, ‘고전(적)’은 지식의 근거, 동양/중국/조선의 전통문화·민족문학 유산으로 인식되면서도, 문명화를 위해 타파해야 할 구습으로 타자화되는 양가적 상황에 놓여있음을 확인하였다. 아울러 주류 문학 담론의 주변부에 놓여있던 고전(적)의 글쓰기적 활용 양상을 통해, 당대 『개벽』의 필자와 독자들이 상당 수준의 한학 지식과 한문학적 소양을 갖추었으며, 다수의 고전(적)을 독서물로 생산하고 향유하였다는 점을 알 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The classics of Gaebyeok in the 1920s are cited in various articles, such as literary and academic texts, travelogues, and research reports, and are also included as reading materials. However, the concept of the classics tends to be referred to as a means of comparison between modern and world literature or as a symbol of national literature and tradition. As such, it is difficult to find articles whose main focus is on the theory of classical literature itself. This study examines the context and status of classic texts developed both inside and outside the literary discourse of Gaebyeok in the 1920s, and the perception of the classics as canon and tradition. In order to examine the reference patterns and characteristics of classic texts across various strata of the articles, the main conceptual key words constituting the discourse of the selected articles were quantified by respective categories before conducting a review of their semantic structures. Also the composition of literary discourse was examined through the frequency of occurrence of literary concept words, and the distribution and network aspects of co-occurrence words. Based on these findings, this study attempts to establish a foundation to look at the compositional context of classical literature and the topography highlighting the status of citations of the classics and by clarifying the context of such references.
