국문 초록

21세기 전반 공공영역에서 20세기 역사의 기념과 기억화 작업이 넘친다. 공공영역에서 역사를 기억하고 기념하고 재현하고 활용하는 거대한 역사 실천이 새로운 역사 현상이 되고 있다. 역사가들은 그것을 비판과 분석, 연구와 토론의 대상으로 삼아야 한다. 공공역사의 영역이 다양하니 그 쟁점도 다양하다. ‘역사소비’ 규정은 그 현상을 포착하지 못한다. ‘역사대중화’라는 낡은 개념은 그 현상의 이해를 막는다. 또 공공역사를 ‘시민의 역사쓰기’로 이해하면 위로부터의 공공역사 발의와 관심이 묻힌다. 공공역사가 단순히 학문적 역사연구의 성과인 역사적 진실을 공공영역에서 잘 적용하거나 발현시키는 것이 아니고 독자적인 역사 서술과 재현이기에 그것을 둘러싸고 는 쟁점과 질문, 과제가 계속 쌓인다. 공공역사의 실천 윤리도 밝혀져야 한다. 공공역사를 대학의 역사 연구와 교육의 일부로 수용해야 한다. 공공역사는 이미 역사학의 일부다. 공공역사는 역사가의 원천적 ‘책임’ 영역이다. 한국 공공역사학회 설립이 필요하다

영문 초록

In the first half of the 21st century, the commemoration and remembrance of 20th century history has overflowed into the public sphere. As different as the fields of public history are, so are their points of contention. The term “consuming history” does not capture the phenomenon. The older concept of “popularising history” prevents the understanding of the phenomenon. Understanding public history as “historiography by citizens” buries public history initiatives and interests from above, from politics and administration. Public history does not simply apply or express in public the historical truth that is the result of academic historical research, but it is a historical account in its own right. Issues and tasks continue to accumulate around it. The ethics of the practice of public history should also be revealed. Public history should be accepted as part of university history research and education. Public history is the “area of responsibility” of historians. ‘Public History Society’ should be established in Korea.
