국문 초록

이 글은 간재 전우가 생애의 마지막까지 도학을 연구하고 후학을 가르치는 스승으로서의 역할을 하였다는 점에 착안하여 그가 생각한 스승[師]은 무엇인지 알아보고자 하는 의도에서 접근하였다. 간재의 화도수정본 습유 소재 증서류 산문은 모두 제자들에 대한 당부가 담겨 있다는 특징이 있다. 그리고 그의 ｢擇師說｣은 心學을 비롯한 다른 학문들이 날로 성해가는 상황에서 正學, 즉 聖學을 옹호하고 이를 전수할 책임을 인식한 간재의 ‘師’에 대한 인식이 표출되었는데, 간재는 극단적으로 지금의 스승은 이치이고 의리라고 선언한다. 이는 바른 이치와 의리를 가르쳐 줄 스승이 없는 상황에서 후학들이 배워야 할 것은 바로 이치이며 의리이기 때문이다. 간재는 무슨 생각이 있었기에 그토록 수많은 제자를 길러낼 수 있었던가? 간재의 글 중에서 이를 읽어내는 것은 쉽지 않겠지만 대략적으로 보면 성학을 전수하고 후학을 바르게 인도해야 한다는 스승으로서의 책임감이 있었기에 가능하였던 것이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article was approached with the intention of finding out what he thought of as a teacher[師], focusing on the fact that Ganjae Jeon-Wu studied Tao until the end of his life and served as a teacher to teach the latter learners. The documentary prose of Ganjae's Hwadosujeongbon Seupyu has a characteristic that it all contains a request to the disciples. And his ｢Taeksaseol(擇師說; choose teacher theory)｣ is in a situation where psychology and other learnings are prospering day by day, Ganjae's recognition of the role as a teacher(師), who recognized the responsibility of defending and passing on orthodox learning(正學), that is, Neo-Confucianism(聖學), was expressed, and Ganjae extremely declares that the current teacher is principles and morals. This is because, in a situation where there is no teacher to teach the right principles and morals, the only thing that the latter learners need to learn is principles and morals. What was Ganjae’s thinking that allowed him to raise so many disciples? It will not be easy to read it in Ganjae's writings, but roughly speaking, it can be said that it was possible because of the responsibility as a teacher to teach Neo-Confucianism and lead the latter learners properly.
