임진왜란기 檄文에 구현된 공포와 격정의 미학

국문 초록

檄文은 전쟁이라는 극한적 상황에서 작성되는 외향적 기록이며, 타인의 행동 변화를 촉구하는 煽動 문학이다. 격문에는 독자의 정서를 자극하여 행동 변화와 실행을 촉구하는 논리와 수사가 설계되어 있으며, 논리와 수사는 모두 격문의 호소력을 증강시키는 중요한 요소이다. 본 연구에서는 임진왜란기 격문의 작가가 설계한 논리 구조와 수사 특성, 그리고 수용적 측면에서 느낄 수 있는 격문의 문예미를 종합적으로 분석하려 하였다. 이는 내용과 형식 두 측면에서 격문의 기능과 미학적 특질을 고찰하려는 것이다. 2장에서는 격문에 반영된 작가의 현실 인식과 美醜 의식을 살펴보았다. 격문의 작가는 인륜과 질서를 ‘아름다움’으로, 이에 反하는 패륜과 무질서를 ‘추악함’으로 바라본다. 격문에서는 忠孝와 仁義의 실천과 향토 수호의 당위를 주지시키는 것이 핵심 논리로 작용하며, 不忠과 不仁의 행위에 대해 적대적인 자세를 견지함으로써 독자로 하여금 공포와 긴장의 정서를 야기시키려 한다. 3장에서는 독자의 격정을 유도하기 위해 語彙․句法․語體 등에 구현된 여러 가지 수사기법을 살폈다. 임진왜란기 격문의 핵심적 미감은 儒家的 내용을 우아하고 단정하게 표현하는 ‘典雅美’, 강렬한 聲勢와 신속한 語氣를 동반하는 ‘豪放美’, 진지한 자세로 엄숙하게 표현하는 ‘莊重美’, 분명한 사리를 경제적인 언어로 전달하는 ‘簡潔美’로 요약할 수 있다. 작품마다 표현의 精麤와 특색은 상이할지라도, 세계를 바라보는 작가의 심미 의식과 호소를 위한 수사 미감이 격문 내에 구비되어 있다는 점은 격문의 미학을 논할 수 있는 근거를 제공한다. 글을 통해 독자의 마음과 행동을 변화시키는 격문의 힘은, 작가와 독자의 공감을 기반으로 이루어지는 고차원적 심미 작용의 결과라 할 수 있겠다.

영문 초록

War Manifestos can be defined as an outward record written during wartime, which is an extreme situation, and also an agitation literature created to call for changes in others' behavior. In war manifestos, certain logics and rhetoric are well laid out to encourage behavioral change and actual execution by stimulating readers' emotion. And such logics and rhetoric are important factors to boost persuasive appeal of war manifestos. Therefore, this study is planned to analyze characteristics of the logic and rhetoric intended by the writer of war manifestos written during the Japanese invasions of Korea, and also to explore the writer's aesthetic consciousness and aesthetic sense in literature and art. It suggests an important meaning as a comprehensive study to cover aesthetic characteristics of war manifestos, particularly in terms of contents and forms. In Chapter 2, The writer's perception of reality and beauty and ugliness consciousness reflected in the war manifestos written during the Japanese invasion of Korea were examined. Basically, the writer regards human morality and order as “beauty”, while the opposite concepts, immorality and disorder, as “ugliness”. Accordingly, the core logic of the war manifesto is based in emphasizing the normative practice of filial piety(忠孝), benevolence and righteousness(仁義), and defend of native land. On the contrary, for any behavior related to disloyalty(不忠), inhumanity(不仁), and treason(大逆), the writer shows a hostile attitude by expressing rage and giving a stern warning in order to arouse certain emotions, such as fear and tension, in readers. In Chapter 3, an aesthetic sense and the rhetorical device used to arouse reader's passion in the war manifestos written during the Japanese invasions of Korea are clarified. The war manifesto writer applies various rhetorical techniques to vocabulary, phrase style, and writing style. To take several key examples of literary and artistic beauty, there are the beauty of refinement that is manifested when expressing Confucian philosophy in the form of elegant and refined expression, the beauty of vigorousness that is manifested when expressing in the expeditious tone with strong authority, the beauty of solemnness that is manifested when describing the seriousness of the situation in the solemn attitude, and the beauty of brevity that is manifested when stating distinct reasons in the economical expression. Although preciseness and roughness, and distinct characteristics of the contents and forms vary depending on works, writers' aesthetic consciousness and literary and artistic beauty in writer's rhetoric still can be the basis to discuss war manifestos from an aesthetic point of view. Writer consciousness seeking for a beautiful world in the actually unbeautiful world and their utilization of the beauty of expression to arouse readers' sympathy and passion enable a higher-level aesthetic action between writers and readers in war manifestos written during the Japanese invasions of Korea.
