도시공간의 재활성화를 위한 스틸스택스 예술문화캠퍼스의 산업유산 재생 사례연구

국문 초록

근현대 산업유산은 그 유휴시설물 및 유휴공간의 재생을 통해 지역의 경제적 부가가치를 높이고 도시 이미지를 향상하는 데 이바지함으로써 도시공간의 재활성화를 위한 정책적 도구로써 활용되어왔다. 다만 선진사례를 제외한 다수의 재생공간은 지속되지 못한 채 재 유휴화되면서 지역민이 드러내기 싫어하는 도시공간으로 전락하고 있다. 본 연구자는 선행연구 및 문헌 고찰을 통해 인간의 공간 경험을 중심으로 긍정적 반응을 끌어낼 수 있는 환경적 자극 요인에서 문제해결의 실마리를 도출하였으며, 스틸스택스 예술문화캠퍼스 사례를 대상으로 분석해 보았다. 1857년에 설립되어 20세기 지역산업의 활력을 이끌던 베들레헴 철강공장이 1995년 폐쇄된 후 지역민 수천 명의 삶과 문화는 단절되었지만, 2000년 이후 추진된 지역개발 이니셔티브와 주민의 환경적, 사회적, 문화적 프로젝트들은 통합적인 경관과 활동적인 프로그램을 통해 매년 150만 명이 넘는 방문자를 맞이하는 장소로 활약하며 도시공간의 재활성화를 이루어 지속가능성을 보인다. 긍정적 공간 경험의 관점에서 스틸스택스 예술문화캠퍼스의 성공 요인은 첫째, 물리적 대상이 가진 형상적 요소를 과거의 향수와 새롭게 조합해서 현대적인 창의성을 발견하게 하고, 인공물과 자연물의 융합된 경관을 바라볼 수 있도록 시각적 요인을 반영함으로써 방문자에게 새로움과 경관적 전환가치를 높였다는 점이다. 둘째, 기능적 요소의 변화를 통해 새롭고 풍부한 체험 거리와 함께 기본적인 편의와 환경 안전을 통하여 실용적 공간을 제공함으로써 체험적 요인을 반영하여 용도적 전환가치를 높였다는 점이다. 본 연구는 산업유산을 비롯한 유휴시설 및 유휴공간의 재생을 통해 도시공간의 재활성화를 확산하기 위해서는 그 대상 중심의 계획이 아니라 인간의 정서변화 요인을 반영하여 긍정적 공간 경험을 중심으로 추진되어야 함을 주지하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Modern and contemporary industrial heritage has been used as a policy tool for revitalizing urban spaces by contributing to enhancing the economic added value of the region and improving the image of the city through the regeneration of idle facilities and idle spaces. However, except for advanced cases, many playback spaces have not continued and have been re-idled, turning into urban spaces that local people do not want to reveal. Through previous studies and literature reviews, this researcher derived clues to problem-solving from environmental stimuli that can draw positive responses based on human spatial experiences, and analyzed the case of the Steel Stacks Arts and Culture Campus. The lives and cultures of thousands of local people have been cut off since the Bethlehem Steel Plant, which was established in 1857 and led to the vitality of the 20th century, but the regional development initiatives and residents' environmental, social, and cultural projects since 2000 have been active as a place to welcome more than 1.5 million visitors every year. From the perspective of positive spatial experience, the success factor of the Steel Stacks Arts and Culture Campus is that first, the formal elements of the physical object are newly combined with nostalgia in the past to discover modern creativity and reflect visual factors to view the fused landscape of artificial and natural objects. Second, through changes in functional factors, the value of use conversion was increased by reflecting experiential factors by providing a practical space through basic convenience and environmental safety along with new and abundant experiences. This study aims to note that in order to spread urban space revitalization through the regeneration of idle facilities and idle spaces, including industrial heritage, it should be promoted based on positive space experiences by reflecting human emotional change factors, not target-oriented plans.
