플라톤 『향연』에 나타난 앎의 특성과 교육적 함의

국문 초록

이야기를 상실한 지식은 사랑을 불러일으키지 않는다. 서사가 배제된 교육, 그로 인해 존재론적인 변화를 끌어내지 못하는 교육은 지식의 에로스가 시작될 가능성을 차단한다. 에로스(사랑)를 주제로 담론을 전개하는 플라톤의 대화편 『향연』에서 앎은 얼룩처럼 곳곳에 묻어있다. 본 연구의 목적은 『향연』에 나타난 앎의 특성을 세 가지로 제시하고, 그 속의 교육적 함의를 밝히는 데 있다. 첫째, 이 작품은 서사적 요소와 은유를 풍부하게 활용함으로써 등장인물들이 함께 구성해나가는, ‘이야기’로서의 앎을 전달한다. 둘째, 이 작품은 결핍을 인식하고 완전함을 향해 추동하는 앎의 역동성을 보여준다. 셋째, 이 작품은 알키비아데스와 소크라테스의 관계를 통해 지식이 고통, 혼란, 광기 등의 감정을 유발하는 현상을 생생하게 그린다. 앎의 서사성, 역동성, 그리고 고통이 확보되는 교육에서는 언어와 사유가 진정한 나의 것으로서 지속되며, 지식이 “난점” 그 자체로 남아 논의가 종결되지 않는다. 『향연』은 특별한 결말이 존재하지 않는다. 대신 우리에게 정답이 아닌 ‘여운’을 남긴다. 진정한 혼의 아름다움, 그리고 “지혜 사랑”이 무엇인지에 대한 끝없는 다음의 이야기들을 자극할 뿐이다.

영문 초록

Knowledge without stories does not evoke love. This paper presents three characteristics of knowledge in Plato’s Symposium and reveals its educational implications. First, Symposium uses rich narrative elements and poetic metaphors to deliver knowledge through character-constructed narrative. Second, Symposium deals with the ‘dynamics of knowledge’ that start from deficiency and drive toward perfection. Third, through the relationship between Alcibiades and Socrates, this work vividly depicts the phenomenon of eros (love), where knowledge causes emotions such as pain, confusion, and madness. Education that secures narrativity, dynamism, and the pain of knowledge allows language and thought to persist forever. Education that excludes narrative and blocks the possibility of eros in learning fails to engender ontological changes in students’ lives. In Plato’s Symposium, which develops a discourse on the theme of eros, knowledge remains like “footprints” throughout the conversation. The fate of knowledge is inherently characterized by the fact that its manifestation cannot be short-lived. Knowledge’s beauty, wonder, and vitality bloom when students and teachers share the same narrative and love. Symposium ends in a state of aporia, without a decisive last scene. Plato leaves us with lingering impressions, not absolute answers. He is looking forward to the next endless story about eternal wisdom and beauty.
