국문 초록

『에세』는 몽테뉴의 자기 탐구이면서 그의 교육사상을 집대성한 저술이다. ‘나는 무엇을 아는가’라는 질문으로 그는 자신이 읽고 경험한 모든 것을 검토하면서 통념을 따라가지 않고 자신만의 고유한 견해와 판단을 만들어갔다. 그의 교육사상은 자기 자신과 인간에 대한 오랜 탐구에 기반을 두고 있다. 그 결과 이상적인 르네상스 인간상에서 벗어나 현세적 인간에 천착하고, 인간 이성의 한계를 인정함으로써 진리의 다양한 가능성을 수용하고 인간 삶의 차이를 존중한다. 특히 그에게 고전은 현재의 자신과 만나고 삶에 형태와 의미를 부여하는 재료가 되는데, 이 새로운 고전 탐구는 현학적이고 형식적인 당시의 협소한 언어주의 경향에서 벗어나 고전 탐구의 본래 의미를 회복시켜준다. 학문의 심연을 고찰하고 ‘더 인간적인 것’에 주목하면서 교육의 본질과 그에 대한 지식인의 사유를 집약하고 있기 때문에 『에세』는 16세기 프랑스 인문주의의 보고(寶庫)로 간주된다.

영문 초록

Montaigne’s Essais is not only the result of his self-exploration, but also the integrated work of his educational thought. Through the question, “What do I know?” he reviewed everything he had read and experienced, not following conventional knowledge but creating his own views and judgments. His educational thought is based on his long-term exploration of the self and human beings. As a result, having freed himself from the ideal of the Renaissance man, he could pay attention to living men, accept the various possibilities of truth by acknowledging the limits of human reason, and respect the differences between people. In particular, the classics are transformed into living material that permits him to meet with his present self and imbue life with form and meaning. His new exploration of classics was separated from the narrow linguistic tendencies of the time, both pedantic and formal, and restored the original meaning of classical exploration. Montaigne’s Essais must be considered a treasure of 16th century French humanism, because it integrates intellectual thoughts regarding the essence of education, exploring the abyss of sciences and paying deep attention to the “more human’s aspects of life”.
