NHK 대하드라마 <료마전(龍馬伝)>과 일본의 사카모토 료마(坂本龍馬) 인식

국문 초록

본고는 <료마전>에 나타난 서사 전개 방식과 구성의 특질이 2010년이라는 시점에서 어떻게 나타나는지 살펴보기 위해, 1962년부터 연재된 시바 료타로의 『료마가 간다』에 나타난 사카모토 료마의 인물상이 <료마전>에 어떻게 계승 혹은 변용되었는지를 비교·분석해보았다. <료마전>에 나타난 사카모토 료마는 1962년부터 연재를 시작해 1966년 끝맺은 시바의 『료마가 간다』에 나타난 사카모토 료마 상(像)에 대한 동시대적 재인식의 시도라고도 볼 수 있다. 일본에서의 일반적인 사카모토 료마 인식은 시바 료타로의 『료마가 간다』에 묘사된 료마의 활약에서 기인하였다. 시바는 고치현에 존재했던 사료와 설화를 수집하고 학자의 연구 성과 등을 인용하면서도 작가적 상상력을 발휘하여 유신의 조력자였던 료마의 성격을 1960년대의 일본의 시대적 특질과 결부하여 매력 있게 묘사하였다. 그러면서도 문학과 역사의 영역을 작품 내외에서 구분하는 서술을 견지하는 것을 통해 『료마가 간다』의 료마가 시바가 창작한 ‘료마(竜馬)’였음을 생애에 걸쳐 관철하였다. 반면 <료마전>의 경우는 기획 초기에 『료마가 간다』와 다른 이야기를 그려내고 싶다고 밝혔고 서사의 진행 방식과 주변 인물의 각색 등 변화를 주고는 있지만, 결과적으로 주인공 료마에 있어서는 『료마가 간다』에 나타난 료마의 서사와 맥락을 대부분 차용하는 것을 통해 오히려 시바의 료마 이미지를 강화하는 효과를 낳았다. 나아가 <료마전>의 료마는 『료마가 간다』의 료마가 가진 결점마저도 보완하여 서브 리더가 아닌 완벽한 리더로써 그려내고 있다. <료마전>의 『료마가 간다』에 대한 거리 두기는 서로 다른 시의성에서 비롯되었다고 할 수 있겠지만, 소설 속 시바의 료마(竜馬) 상이 NHK 대하드라마를 통해 실재화한 료마(龍馬) 인식으로 재구축되는 과정은 앞으로의 우리가 창작 역사물을 이야기할 때 주의해야 할 지점을 시사하고 있지 않은지 생각되는 바이다. 역사를 제재로 한 소설과 영상물은 그저 엔터테인먼트로 수렴될 수 없는 정체성의 동기화를 필연적으로 동반하기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This paper compares and analyzes how the figure of Ryoma Sakamoto, shown in Ryotaro Shiba’s Ryoma! published serially from 1962, is succeeded or transformed, in order to examine the way of narrative development and structural property shown in Ryomaden. Ryoma Sakamoto described in Ryomaden can be understood as an attempt for contemporary rediscovery of the figure of Ryoma Sakamoto shown in the series Ryoma! published from 1962 until 1966. In Japan, the general understanding of Ryoma Sakamoto stems from his activities described in Ryotaro Shiba’s Ryoma! Shiba described Ryoma, a facilitator of the Ishin, as an attractive character in connection with contemporary properties of Japan in the 1960s, by collecting historical records and local tales from Kochi Prefecture; quoting academic researches; and using imagination. At the same time, the writer held fast to separation of literature and history both in and out of his work, making clear through his life that Ryoma(竜馬) in Ryoma! is his creation. On the other hand, in case of Ryomaden, the writers stated that they would like to narrate a story different from Ryoma! in the early stage of development and made changes in terms of progression of the narrative, dramatization of surrounding characters, etc. However, Shiba’s image of Ryoma was reinforced in the end, for the writers adopted narratives and contexts of Ryoma from Ryoma! Furthermore, even the flaws of Ryoma from Ryoma! were corrected in Ryoma from Ryomaden, creating a image of an impeccable leader, not a sub-leader. Ryomaden’s distancing of Ryoma! may be due to the different times, but the process of reconstruction from Shiba’s character of Ryoma(竜馬) in the novel to substantialized perception of Ryoma(龍馬) through NHK’s epic drama series seems to suggest points to take notice when we deal with historical fictions, for novels and films that have history as its topic are inevitably accompanied by synchronization of identity, which cannot be converged into entertainment.
