국문 초록

송메이링은 중국역사에서 가장 혼란했던 시기에 국가이익을 지키기 위해 노력하였고 여성의 교육과 해방을 위해 노력한 선구자였다. 그는 단순히 퍼스트 레이디라는 정치가의 아내로서 역할을 담당한 것이 아니라, 전문적인 지식과 능력뿐만 아니라, 정치적인 야심과 확고한 의지로 스스로의 리더십을 발휘해 총통의 부족한 점을 보완할 수 있었고 국제 외교무대에서 폭 넓은 정치 외교활동을 통해 모든 정책결정에 지대한 영향력을 미쳤던 실력가였으며 활동영역은 정치, 외교, 군사, 문화, 여성, 아동, 교육 등 광범위했다. 중국공산당과의 전쟁에서는 정치적 패자였으나 1940년대 그녀는 미국의회를 상대로 열정적인 로비활동(lobby)을 펼쳐 미국의 원조를 끌어낸 ‘차이나 로비’의 주역이었다. 특히 1943년 당시 미국대통령 루즈벨트의 초청으로 외국여성으로서는 최초로 미국 상하 양원 합동회의에서 일본의 중국침략 만행을 규탄하고 미국원조를 요청하는 연설을 하는 등 대미외교에서 뛰어난 외교력을 발휘한 걸출한 여성정치리더였다. 그녀의 명성은 이데올로기의 대치국면으로 제대로 평가되지 못하고 있다. 그녀의 정치력과 외교력에서 보인 뛰어난 그의 리더십은 재평가되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This new social change requires an innovative model of leadership that is different from the earlier one. That is to say, the society starts to need a new leadership model that can replace an old male leadership. Emerging female leaders could provide a model for a new leadership in this social change. A new leadership model represents soft and communicative power dominance rather than unilateral oppressive power dominance. The leadership of Madame Chiang Soong Mayling meets such a new model of leadership. Madame Chiang Soong Mayling is a first lady of China who was born in the 19th century and lived throughout the 20th century till the 21st century. Madame Chiang Soong Mayling observed the important moments of Chinese modern history, such as Chinese Revolution, the downfall of the Ch'ing dynasty, the Sino-Japanese War, the second world war, the domestic war between the Nationalist party and the Communist party, the division of China and Taiwan, the movement of the Nationalist party to Taiwan, and the confrontation between China and Taiwan. Indeed, she is a witness of modern Chinese history. She helped her husband, Chiang Kai-shek, to lobby the Congress of the U.S. to draw American support to China. She was a English translator, a foreign policy advisor, and a personal assistant of her husband. In spite of such a talent of her, there have not much studies on her. The importance of her is conventionally underestimated compared to that of her elder sister, Soong Ching Ling.. As the prominent journal, Times, described her “a dragon female,” however her accomplishment and leadership could provide a female leadership role model not only China but also for the overall Asia. In addition, she could play a role model for a first-lady. In this concern, it is worthy of studying Madame Chiang Soong Mayling's leadership as a role model for female leadership in the 21st global age.
