국문 초록

선종의 핵심사상인 선종의 주요 종지는 “불립문자(不立文字), 직지인심(直指人心), 견성성불(見性成佛), 교외별전(敎外別傳)”이다. 그 중에서 가장 강조하고 있는 것은 불립문자이다. 불립문자는 문자를 활용하지 않고 곧바로 앉아서 자성자리를 찾아가는 것을 말한다. 그러므로 선은 문자나 말을 떠나 집착함이 없이 문자나 말로 표현할 수 없는 경지에 이르는 것을 말한다. 이 연구에서는 백남준의 초월적 예술행위의 근원을 불교정신·선사상에서 탐색하고자 하였다. 불교정신·선사상을 통한 ‘무형식의 형식’이란 파격적인 특성은 백남준 예술의 특징이라 할 수 있다. 백남준 비디오 예술작품에 내재된 선적· 미학적 요소는 명상을 통한 자아성찰, 깨달음의 순간, 자연과의 친화, 자아의 초월, 이 네 가지 특징으로 구분하여 정리하였다. 백남준은 정체성을 유지하면서 형상을 초월하는 선의 실체적 경지를 중요시하였다. 초월성 예술은 경계가 없는 환경 속에서 참여와 소통을 통한 비디오아트를 선적 예술로 승화시켜 그 영역을 확장하였다. 이러한 선사상의 영향을 받은 비디오아트는 기존 미학의 한계를 극복하여 새로운 예술의 방향, 인간화된 예술(humanized art)을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The tenets of the Zen sect of Buddhism are “not establishing letters(不立文字), directly pointing at the human mind(直指人心), seeing the nature and becoming Buddha(見性成佛), and a separate transmission apart from the Teachings(敎外別傳).” Among these doctrines, ‘not establishing letters’ is emphasized the most. Not establishing letters means stepping forth right towards the world of enlightenment not using any scriptures. Thus, Zen pursues the state beyond the expression of letters or words without attaching to any scriptures. This study explores the origin of Paik, Nam June’s transcendental artistic activities with Buddhist spirit and Zen thought. The unprecedented characteristic of ‘a formless form’ through Buddhist spirit and Zen ideology is a feature of Paik, Nam June. Zen and aesthetic elements in Paik, Nam June’s video art are classified into four features of introspection through meditation, the moment of enlightenment, rapport with the nature, and the transcendence of ego. Paik stressed the practical dimension of Zen transcending physical figures while maintaining their identities. Transcendental art in the limitless environment sublimates video art into Zen art through engagement and communication and expands its domain. Video art influenced by such Zen ideology has presented humanized art as well as a new direction of art by overcoming the existing aesthetic boundaries.
