국문 초록

고당(古堂) 조만식(曺晩植)은 일제 강점기에 다양한 형태의 독립운동을 수행한 활약한 위대한 기독교 민족지도자였다. 그는 일제 강점기 내내 교육, 경제, 사회, 체육, 언론, 문화 등 실로 다양한 영역에서 걸쳐 한국독립의 실력양성을 위해 전력을 다했다. 그는 평생을 민족과 함께 수난을 겪으며 일제의 가혹한 탄압에도 비폭력·무저항·불복종을 고수하며 독립운동에 매진하였다. 조만식의 삶은 기독교에 입교하기 전의 모습과 입교 후의 모습은 판이하게 달리 나타났다. 기독교인으로서의 조만식은 복음을 내면화하면서 이전의 방탕한 생활을 접고, 예수 사랑, 이웃 사랑, 나라 사랑을 좌우명으로 하는 혁명적인 삶의 변화를 맞이하였다. 그가 죽음을 두려워하지 않고 일제에 당당히 맞서며 독립을 위한 실력양성운동에 매진할 수 있었던 것은 독실한 기독교인으로서 하나님의 능력을 믿고 의지했던 데 기인한다. 이 논문은 기독교 민족운동가로서의 조만식의 생애와 특히 독립운동기에 그가 행한 민족교육에 내용과 그 의미에 대하여 분석할 것이다.

영문 초록

Cho Man-sik was a great Christian national leader who performed various independence movements during the Japanese colonial period. During this period, he devoted himself to fostering Korea's independence in various fields, including education, economy, society, physical education, newspapers, and culture. Throughout his life, he devoted himself to the independence movement in ways such as non-violence, non-resistance, and disobedience against the harsh oppression of Japanese imperialism. Cho Man-sik's aspects of life appeared differently before and after joining Christianity. The principle of his life has been changed from ‘I-centered life’ to ‘Jesus-centered life.’ As a Christian, Cho Man-sik internalized the Gospel and ended his desolate life, and faced a revolutionary life change with the motto of love for Jesus, love for neighbors, and love for the country. As a Christian Cho Man-sik, internalizing the gospel, has settled his former desolate life and faced a revolutionary life change with the motto of Jesus love, neighbor love, and country love. Against the Japanese imperialism, he was able to devote himself to the movement to foster independence. This is due to trusting and relying on God's power as a devout Christian. This paper will analyze Cho Man-sik's life as a Christian national activist and, in particular, the contents and meaning of national education he has done during the period of independence movement.
