국문 초록

본 연구는 한국의 민족정체성과 다문화의 역사를 살펴보고 있다. 현재 한국사회는 다문화사회로 진입하고 있다. 다문화사회가 급속한 속도로 진행되어 감에도 불구하고, 한국 사회 내의 이주민들 안정적 정착보다는 ‘차별’과 ‘배제’라는 소외의 공간에 머물러 있다. 이러한 현상의 궁극적인 원인은 한국 사회 내 고착화된 순혈주의에 기반한 단일민족주의라는 상상의 공동체에 갇혀있음으로 인해 빚어진 것이다. 한국의 민족은 역사적으로 다양한 민족과의 상호 교류와 융합 속에서 정형화되었지만, 근대 초의 국가의 위기를 극복하기 위해 민족주의를 강화하는 방향으로 선회하였다. 단일민족주의 의식은 한민족의 사상이나 지역적 이해관계를 초월하여 공동체로 통합하는 당위성 및 가능성을 제공하면서 민족 정체성을 확립하게 하는 긍정적인 영향도 지니고 있다. 그러나 한국 사회가 추구해야 할 다문화사회에는 강한 반작용을 하고 있다. 세계화 이후 국제사회는 다문화사회가 되고 있으며, 한국사회 역시 사회·경제적 필요에 의해 다문화주의를 수용해야 하는 입장이다. 그러나 한국에 이주해 온 이주민들이 직면하는 현실은 ‘배제’와 ‘차별’의 울타리에 갇히게 된다. 한국의 역사 속에서 다문화현상은 일상적이었으며, 이는 이주와 융합이 반복되면서 민족정체성을 구축해 왔다는 것이다. 한국사회는 닫힌 민족주의에서 열린 민족주의로 나아가야 할 것이다. 이는 과거 열린 민족주의를 재생하는 것이며, 열린 민족주의를 지향하는 국가만이 번영된 국가로 나아갈 것이기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This study explores Korean national identity and multicultural history. At present, Korea is stepping into a multicultural society. Although the society is turning rapidly into a multicultural one, married immigrants in Korean society are staying in the isolated space of “discrimination” and “exclusion”. A fundamental cause of this phenomenon stems from Korean society being confined in an imaginary community of homogeneous nationalism based on ethnic purity. Though Korean people have been formed through historical exchanges and fusion of diverse nations, they’ve swerved into intensfying nationalism to overcome national crises at early modern era. The idea of homogeneous nationalism has a positive effect on establishing national identity by overcoming monoethnic thoughts and regional interests and providing justification and possibility to integrate into a community. This idea, however, counters the multicultural society Korea has to pursue. After globalization, the international community is growing into a multicultural society and so, Korea also has to accept multiculturalism for socioeconomic needs. The reality immigrants in Korea are facing with is the barrier of “exclusion” and “discrimiation.” In the history of Korea, multicultural phenomena are ordinary and national identity has been constructed through repeated immigration and fusion. Korean society should proceed from closed nationalism to open one. This means a revival of past open nationalism because a country pursuing open nationalism will advance to a prospering nation.
