국문 초록

이름은 대상을 지칭함으로써 그 실제를 유추하게 만든다. 비지(碑誌) 중 묘지명(墓誌銘)은 묘주(墓主)의 ‘세계(世系)-생평(生平)-총평(總評)’을 중심으로 당대와 후대에 묘주의 정보를 제공하려는 목적에서 짓는다. 따라서 묘주에게로 접근하는 통로에서 마주하게 되는 이름은 묘지명에 있어서 꼬리표(label) 이상의 의미를 갖는다. 하지만 한(漢)에서 당(唐)으로, 다시 당에서 송(宋)으로 시대가 바뀌는 동안, 여성 묘주의 이름이 묘지명에서 점차 보이지 않게 되는 경향을 확인할 수 있다. 이러한 중국 묘지명의 흐름에 기대어 보면, 전근대 한국의 묘지명 역시 비슷한 추세로 진행되었을 것이라 추정할 수 있다. 이것이 <염경애묘지명(廉瓊愛墓誌銘)>에서 보이는 경애(瓊愛)라는 이름의 가치가 클 수밖에 없는 이유다. 본고는 고려시대 묘지명과 고려의 사회·문화적 환경 속에서 <염경애묘지명>을 살펴보기 위한 목적에서 시작된 논의이다. 본고는 그 가치를 입체적으로 조명하기 위해 호칭의 변화와 이름 공개 여부를 실마리로써 <염경애묘지명> 자체를 분석하고 그 특징적 면모를 중국의 묘지명과도 비교해 보았다. 그 결과 <염경애묘지명>은 지면의 성격에 따른 호칭의 변화나 묘주에 대한 간엄(簡嚴)한 정보의 제공이 특징적이었다. 아울러 작가 주석 서술과 장면 제시로써 특징적 사례를 구성하여 염경애의 정체성을 형상했고, 묘주 염경애에 대한 애도 역시 빠트리지 않았다는 사실 역시 주목할 만했다. 이로써 볼 때, <염경애묘지명>은 묘주의 이름을 밝힌 묘지명이라는 가치뿐 아니라, 묘지명이 빠지기 쉬운 투식과 과도한 칭송에서 벗어나 묘주 염경애 삶의 의미를 수립하기 위해 공들인 글이라는 의미 역시 지닌 고려 전기 대표적 묘지명 중 한 편이다.

영문 초록

A name makes an inference about its reality by designating an object. The epitaph is made with the purpose of providing information on the owner of the grave to the present and future generations, centering on the owner of the grave’s family lineage(世系)-life history(生平)-general review(總評). Therefore, the name, which is the entrance to the passage to the owner of the grave, is more than a label in the epitaph. However, during the transition from the Han dynasty to the Tang dynasty and from the Tang dynasty to the Song dynasty, it can be seen that the female owner of the grave’s name gradually disappear from the epitaphs. Leaning on the flow of Chinese epitaphs, it can be inferred that pre-modern Korean epitaphs followed a similar trend. This is the reason why the name of Gyeongae(瓊愛) in Yeom, Kyung-ae’s Epitaph(廉瓊愛墓誌銘) is of great value. This paper is a discussion that began with the purpose of examining Yeom, Kyung-ae’s epitaph in the social and cultural environment of the Goryeo dynasty. In order to illuminate its value, this study analyzed Yeom, Kyung-ae’s epitaph itself as a clue to the change of the title and whether the name was disclosed, and compared its characteristic features with the Chinese epitaphs. As a result, Yeom, Kyung-ae’s epitaph was characterized by changing the title according to the nature of the site and providing accurate information about the owner of the grave. In addition, it was noteworthy that the identity of Yeom, Kyung-ae was formed by composing a characteristic case with diegesis and mimesis, and the fact that he did not leave out his condolences to the owner of the grave, Yum Gyeong-ae was also noteworthy. From this point of view, Yeom, Kyung-ae’s epitaph is one of epitaphs in the early Goryeo dynasty, which not only has the value of epitaph that reveals tomb owner’s name, but also means that the epitaph is an elaborate writing to establish the meaning of the life of the tomb owner, Yeom Gyeong-ae, free from the cliche and excessive praise.
