사계(沙溪)의 경서변의(經書辨疑) 연구

국문 초록

본 글은 김장생(金長生, 1548~1631)의 주요 저서인 『경서변의(經書辨疑)』 중에 <소학변의(小學辨疑)>에서 제기된 문제를 문자(文字), 구절(句節), 문장(文章) 등으로 나누어 살펴봄으로써 문자의 오탈(誤脫) 여부, 문장 독해의 적부 등을 규명하고자 한다. 『경서변의(經書辨疑)』는 『소학』을 포함한 여러 경서류를 다루었다는 점에서 사계 경학(經學)의 범위를 넓히는 중요한 학문적 저술이라고 할 수 있다. 사계는 특히 『소학』을 중시하여, 『소학』을 기본서로 삼고 그 내용을 실행하여 준칙으로 삼았는데, <소학변의>는 다룬 범위가 본문 이외에 <독법> 등도 다루고, 본문, 그리고 본문의 주(註)도 다루었다. 사계의 『경서변의』에서 <소학변의>의 70조항을 ‘『경서변의(經書辨疑)』와 <소학변의(小學辨疑)> 개요’, ‘소학변의(小學辨疑)의 실상’으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 변의의 개요에 대한 각 조항으로 각 경서의 본문(本文), 집주(集註) 등의 1차 주석(註釋), 그리고 소주(小註, 大全)의 2차 주석까지도 살펴보았다. ‘<소학변의(小學辨疑)>의 실상’에서는 원문교감(原文校勘), 구두변의(句讀辨疑), 구절보충(句節補充), 문의변의(文義辨疑), 편집논의(編輯論議)를 다루었다. <소학변의>는 이와같이 널리 중시되어 학계에 오래도록 영향을 끼쳤다. 이에 대한 구체적 논의, 즉 <소학변의>의 문자변의(文字辨疑), 문의변의(文義辨疑) 등을 통해 『소학』을 보다 정확하게 이해할 수 있도록 하고, 따라서 그 우수한 실상이 드러내고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to determining and examining literary errors such as typo and interpretation raised by Sakye(沙溪) Kim Jang-saeng(金長生, 1548~1631) in his 『Interpretation on Confucian Classics(經書辨疑)』 by dividing and examining the problems raised into individual word, phrase, and paragraph. Sakye was deeply interested in acedemics and less interested in poetry. This is evident as among 51 books in 『Collected Works of Sakye(沙溪全書)』, 32 books(about 60%) are written on academic writings. Among them, 『Interpretation on Confucian Classics(經書辨疑)』 is an important academic writing that broadens his academic scope of 『Confucian Classics』 in that he has dealth with several documents of including 『Sohak(小學)』. In his , Sakye raises literary issues such as error in typography and possible misunderstanding of texts and provides his answers. The narrates by listing problematic issues according to original text’s table of content, and his purpose was largely to point out errors in existing readings to pursue precise meaning of the text. This is the precisely why he focuses heavily on understanding the true meaning of each clauses of original texts. Understand the true meaning is the basis of correctly interpreting 『Sohak(小學)』 and 『Confucian Classics』, and therefore is as important as systemizing the documents. Due to such precise understanding, King Yeongjo’s edition of 『Translated Sohak(小學)』 was introduced and this translation is being used up to now. This paper successfully uncovered very important facts. We discovered that Sakye’s “Interpretation of Sohak” might be the source of King Yeongjo’s edition of 『Translated Sohak』, Recording book name 『Yeki(禮記)』 is correlated the contents of book, meaning of character “Cheo(處)” was pursued separately for differenct intonation, and much more. There is much more to be uncovered and therefore continuously research and study is required. This paper is limited to 『Sohak(小學)』, but we look forward to seeing detailed effort of tracking precise meanings for interpretation of other Confucian Classics as well.
