국문 초록

본 논문은 개화사상과 개화파에 관한 연구이다. 19세기 구한말 조선사회는 서구열강들의 동양에 대한 제국주의적 침략과 무력에 의한 압박으로 청나라가 굴복적인 개방을 강제당하는 것을 보고 위기의식을 자각하기 시작했다. 이와 더불어 봉건제 신분사회의 모순과 지도층의 부정부패로 인하여 조선사회 내부의 문제도 동시에 부각되기 시작하였다. 국제정세에 의한 외적위기와 조선사회의 내적위기가 동시에 직면하게 된 것이다. 이를 극복하고 대응하기 위해서 근대적 사상의 시초가 된 것이 개화사상이다. 동·서양을 막론하고 어느 시대나 새로운 사상의 출현과 함께 이에 따른 전환기(변환기)가 도래 할 때, 새로운 사상에 대한 현실적 적용에 있어서 방법과 속도에 따른 노선의 대립이 존재하게 된다. 연구결과 조선사회 역시 선각적인 지식인들이 중심이 되어 근대화와 개화사상에 대해 그 필요성을 인식하고 개화파가 신조되었다. 그러나 개화파 내부에서 개화에 대한 방법과 인식, 그리고 속도와 범위를 놓고 갈등과 이견이 노출 되어 그 성향에 따라 급진개화파와 온건개화파로 분화되었다. 현재 우리는 19세기와 같이 급변하는 시대적 전환기에 놓여있진 않지만, 정책이나 문화적인 부분에 있어서 개선되어야할 점이나 부족한 부분에 대하여 선진국가의 모습과 사례를 참고하고 때로는 이를 도입하여 수용하기도 한다. 이 과정에서 일어나는 다양한 의견들의 충돌은 필연적이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 볼 때 개화사상의 실현과 방법을 두고 개화파가 분화 되는 과정을 분석해보는 것은 오늘날 우리에게 주는 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper investigates “Enlightenment” thoughts and reformists. The late Joseon society in the 19th century began to perceive a crisis as it observed the Qing Dynasty was forced to open its door under military forces of Western powers after their invasion into the East. Besides, owing to the contradictions of feudal caste system and political leaders' corruption, internal problems of the Joseon society began to be revealed at the same time. Both an external crisis caused by international state of affairs and an internal crisis of the Joseon society emerged simultaneously. In order to overcome and cope with these crises, “Enlightenment” thoughts appeared as the beginning of modern ideas in Korea. When a transitional period came with the appearance of new thoughts at any era and in either the west or the east, a confrontation of factions for the ways and pace concerning the adoption of them arose. In the Joseon society too, intellectuals perceived the necessity of modernization and “Enlightenment” ideas and so, a group of reformists was formed. Within the group, however, conflicts and disagreements with regard to the methods, concepts, pace and extent of reformation emerged and as a result, they were divided into radical and moderate reformist factions. Currently, though we are not situated at a rapidly changing transition period like the 19th century, we consult, introduce and accept the aspects and cases of developed nations in terms of policies and cultural sectors to improve and remedy our shortcomings. Conflicts of diverse opinions in this course are inevitable. In this context, analyzing the process of reformist division because of their disagreement on the implementation and methods of reformist ideas is significant for us today.
