국문 초록

풍수(風水)는 땅의 이치를 밝히는 학문, 즉 지리학(地理學)의 한 분야이다. 지리학의 기원은 동·서양을 막론하고 문화의 역사만큼이나 오래되었다. 땅은 삶의 근거라는 점에서 기본적인 지적(知的) 호기심의 대상이기 때문이다. 지상(地相)을 판단하여 인간 생활에 적용함으로써 발전과 행복을 추구하는 학문이다. 즉 인간이 땅을 이용하는데 있어서 땅의 생성(生成), 변화(變化), 현상(現狀)을 이해하여 효율성을 극대화하고 자연과 조화를 이루며 균형 있는 개발로 편리와 안정을 도모하고자 하는 것이다. 오랜 세월 인류의 경험과 직관에 의해서 자연은 일정한 법칙을 가지고 인간에게 영향을 끼쳐 온 것을 깨닫게 되었는데, 이러한 이치를 정리한 것이 풍수 사상이다. 풍수는 자연과 인간의 상호 관계를 밝히고, 또 이를 잘 활용하여 궁극에는 인류의 질 높은 삶에 기여하게 된다. 전통적(傳統的) 한국 지리(地理) 사상의 기초는 자연(自然)과 인간(人間)의 합일성에 있었다. 자연은 그 자체로서 조화된 질서이며, 인간은 그 자연의 일부라고 생각한 것이다. 그래서 이 사회는 자연의 이치를 연구하여 활용할 것을 강조하게 되는 것이다. 이러한 자연관, 즉 기초적 지리관은 오늘날의 입장에서 보면 생태적(生態的)이고 환경친화적(環境親和的)인 것으로 진보된 것이며 또한 바람직한 것이다. 한국에서 풍수는 역사(歷史)가 오래된 학문이기도 하지만, 진지하게 탐구되고 또 그만큼 널리 활용되어야 할 학문이다. 근래에 새로운 자료와 다양한 방법론으로 풍수의 새로운 측면이 밝혀지고 다양한 해석이 내려지면서 연구가 심화되고 있다. 이러한 흐름에 맞추어 전통 한국학의 한 부분인 풍수의 정의를 다시 살펴보고, 풍수가 미신으로 치부되면서 우리의 삶에 좋지 않은 영향을 주는 역할을 하고 있는지를 현대지리학적 관점으로 재해석 하고자 하는 것이 이 연구의 주제(主題)이다.

영문 초록

Feng-shui(geomancy) is a field of geographical science that aims to explore the reasons of earth. The origin of geography came from ancient times as long as the history of human culture, whether it relates to Oriental or Western world, because earth itself has been a target of our fundamental intellectual curiosity since long times ago in that it is an essential foundation of human life. Feng-shui is a science that aims to determine and apply geomantic topography to human life in pursuit of life development and happiness. In other words, it intends to understand creation, transition and phenomena of ground we use, maximize the efficiency of ground usage, and balance ground developments in harmony with nature, so that we may benefit from convenience and stability in life. Owing to many centuries of human experiences and intuitions, it was discovered that nature influences mankind according to certain laws. Feng-shui ideology is a synthesis of those laws accumulated from the ancient times. Feng-shui makes clear possible interactions between nature and mankind, and also makes a good use of those interactions to contribute ultimately to higher quality of human life. The foundation of Korean traditional geomancy lies in the unity of nature and human being. Our ancestors thought that nature itself is a cosmos of perfect harmony, and human being is a part of nature. That is why human society underlines investigating reasons of nature and applying them to human life. From our contemporary perspectives, such a view of nature is ecological and environment-friendly. As a matter of fact, it is very advanced and favorable. In Korea, Feng-shui is a science that came from long history, but should be seriously explored and widely applied to our life as well. Lately, new facets of Feng-shui have been discovered and diversely interpreted from new data and various methodologies, so that it is further studied by many researchers than before. Keeping in step with these latest trends of geomancy, this study intends to review what is all about the definition of feng shui, a part of traditional Koreanology, and take perspectives of our contemporary geography to re-examine if feng shui is written off as a sort of superstition and plays a role in having negative influences on our life.
