국문 초록

본 소고는 브랜덤의 ‘프레게식 4층위 개념’을 비판적으로 옹호한다. 논자는 인지과학에서 사용하는 ‘개념’과 브랜덤이 말하는 (프레게식) ‘개념’이 서로 양립 불가능하지 않다고 본다. 인지과학에서는 이미 브랜덤의 수직적 4층위와는 다른 방식으로 수평적 4단계로 ‘개념’을 구분해서 사용하고 있다. 본 소고의 주된 관심은 ‘프레게주의 분석철학이 (인지)심리학의 연장선상에 있는 인지과학에 발을 들여 놓으려고 하는(혹은 적극적으로 발을 들여 놓아야 한다는)’ 브랜덤의 주장이 프레게 사상 내에서 모순 없이 정당화될 수 있는지의 여부이다. 이를 위해 본고는, 브랜덤이 자신의 주장을 위한 주된 전거(사실상 유일한 전거)로 삼는 프레게의 Begriffsschrift (『개념표기법』, 1879; [2015])을 포함하여, “On Sense and Reference”(『뜻과 지시체에 관하여』, 1892; [1952]; [2017]), “Function and Concept”(“함수와 개념”, 1891), “On Concept and Object”(“개념과 대상에 관하여”, 1892), Die Grundlagen der Arithmetic (『산수의 기초』, 1884; [2003]), Grundgesetze der Arithmetik (『산수의 근본법칙』, 1966; [2007]) 등에 나타난 ‘개념의 층위적 구별법’과 관련된 프레게의 언급들을 탐색한다. 생각, 사고, 마음, 의식 등의 본질에 대한 경험적 탐구를 하는 인지과학을 염두에 둘 때에, 심리학 혹은 심리주의를 과학적 방법으로 연구하는 데에 대한 프레게의 이해를 체계화시키고 이를 해석해보는 것은 프레게 연구뿐 아니라 인지과학 연구에도 귀중한 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이라고 기대된다. 물론, 이를 위해서는 먼저 ‘프레게주의 분석철학이 인지과학에 그동안 영향을 미치지 못해왔지만(혹은 영향을 미치지 않아왔지만) 앞으로는 적극적으로 영향을 미쳐야 한다.’는 로버트 브랜덤의 주장이 프레게의 사상 내에서 정당화될 수 있는지를 면밀히 살펴보아야 한다. 만약 프레게의 사상 내에서 브랜덤의 ‘프레게식 4 층위 개념’과 인지과학으로의 그 적용이 정당화되지 못한다면, 브랜덤은 ‘프레게의 주장에 정반대되는 주장을 하는 역설적인 프레게주의자’가 된다. 반대로, 만약 정당화될 수 있다면, 앞에서 언급한 것처럼, 프레게의 반심리주의에 대해 다시 돌아보는(reenvisioning) 해석의 풍부함도 제공해줄 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 인지과학에서도 더 체계화된 ‘개념 이론’을 받아들임으로써 인지과학의 어떤 연구대상들(가령 짐승, 아기, 성인, 인공지능 등)이 어떤 종류의 개념들을 갖는지를 더 명확하게 구분할 수 있게 해 줄 것이다. 브랜덤의 ‘프레게식 4층위 개념’이 인지과학에 적용되어야 한다는 주장이 프레게의 사상 내에서 정당화되는지를 판별하기 위해서 본고는 다음의 순서로 구성된다. 먼저, 브랜덤의 ‘프레게식 4층위 개념’이 무엇인지를 살핀다. 그런 다음, 프레게가 정말로 자신의 저술들에서 개념을 4층위로 구분했는가 여부를 살핀다. 만약 프레게가 구분하지 않았다면, 브랜덤의 주장은 프레게의 사상 내에서 정당화되지 않는다. 즉 프레게가 하지 않은 주장을 브랜덤이 하는 것이 되기 때문에, 브랜덤의 주장은 그 힘을 잃는다. 그래서 프레게 저작들로부터 전거를 탐색하는 작업을 해야 한다. 마지막으로, 인지심리학의 확장판인 인지과학에 반심리주의와 논리주의를 주장하는 프레게의 개념 구분법을 적용할 수 있는지를 평가한다.

영문 초록

This paper critically advocates “Robert Brandom's Fregean Four-stage of Concept”. The author believes that the senses of “concept” in cognitive science and in Brandom's are not incommunicable each other. In cognitive science, “concept” is already being used as somewhat horizontal fourstage which is quite different from that of Brandom's vertical sense. The main concern of this paper is whether Brandom's assertion that Frege's analytical philosophy ought to step into cognitive science, which is an extension of cognitive psychology, can be justified without contradiction within Frege's idea. To this end, in search for Frege's references related to the “distinction method of hierarchical concept”, this paper's concern includes Frege's Begriffsschrift(1879; [2015]), which Brandom uses as the main premise for his claim, “On Sense and Reference”(1892; [1952]; [2017]), “Function and Concept”(1891) and others. When considering cognitive science, which explores the essence of thinking, thought, mind, consciousness, et cetera, it is expected that systematizing and interpreting Frege's understanding of psychology or psychologism in a scientific way will help not only research on Frege but also cognitive scientific research. Of course, to this end, first of all, “although Fregean analytical philosophy has not affected (or could not affect) cognitive science, it must actively affect in the future” should be closely examined whether Robert Brandom's argument can be justified within Frege's idea. If it is not justified within Frege's idea that Brandom's application of “Fregean Four-stage of concept” to cognitive science, Brandom becomes a “contradictory Fregean who makes an opposite argument to Frege's”. If justified, however, it will not only provide a wealthy re-envisioning interpretations of Frege's anti-psychology, but will also allow cognitive science to have clearer systematic concepts to their research subjects such as animals, babies, adults, artificial intelligence, et cetera. This paper consists of the following order to determine whether Brandom's claim is justified within Frege's idea. First, it is dealt that what Brandom's Fregean Four-stage concept is. Secondly, it is examined that if Frege himself really divides concept into four stages in his own writings. If Frege did not distinguish, Brandom's argument would fail to obtain legitimacy in Frege's ideas. In other words, since Brandom makes a claim that Frege never made, Brandom's claim loses its momentum. That is the reason why Fregean textual reference should be examined. Finally, it evaluates whether Frege's conceptual distinction method, which claims anti-psychologism and logicism, can be applied to cognitive science, which an extension of cognitive psychology.
