우리는 '비'인간 가족이다

국문 초록

지구는 우리의 집이다. 한 집에 같이 살아가는 이들을 ‘식구’라하며, 식구들이 모인 단위를 ‘가족’이라 한다. 지구라는 집에서 한 식구로 살아가는 가족은 결코 ‘혈연’에 기반한 가족일 수 없다. 지구 위에서 우리의 삶은 수많은 비인간 존재들과 더불어 함께-만들어-나가는 삶이기 때문이다. 따라서 ‘비인간 가족’으로서 우리는 근대적 인간 개념 즉 정신과 육체로 이분화되어, 인간 고유의 역량을 정신에 두는 정의와 개념으로 포괄될 수 없다. 말하자면, 우리의 ‘인간’ 혹은 ‘인간됨’의 정의를 바꾸어야 한다는 말이다. 이는 ‘인간’이란 어떤 무엇이 아니라 ‘어떻게’ 창발하느냐의 과정으로 규정된다는 말이다. 존재는 어떤 실체나 자가생산(autopoiesis)를 통해 이루어지는 것이 아니라, ‘함께-만들기’(sympoiesis)를 통해 창발한다. 인간도 독자적인 어떤 역량이나 특성으로 규정되는 것이 아니라, 비인간 존재들로 연장되어 구성되는 행위자-네트워크를 통해 창발한다. 이는 인간을 포함한 생물의 세계가 결코 무한경쟁과 약육강식 및 승자독식의 세계가 아니라 언제나 자신과 다른 존재들과 더불어 함께 만들어 나가는 세계임을 의미한다. 이러한 인간됨의 특성을 비인간 존재로 ‘연장될 수 있는 역량’ 즉 ‘연장-능력’(extendibility)로 말할 수 있을 것이고, 이를 ‘여인’(與人)의 인간학으로 표현할 수 있을 것이다. 이 ‘여인’(與人, 인간으로 머물기)이란 곧 다른 존재들과 더불어 함께 머물며, 함께 삶을 만들어 가는 것이고, 그래서 ‘인간됨’ 혹은 인간은 언제나 아상블라주로서 ‘가족’이고, 그것이 ‘우리는 하나님 안에서 한 가족’이라는 말의 신학적 함의이다.

영문 초록

The Earth is our home and house. In the North-East linguistic usage, family literally means ‘eating-together in the house.’ In that we are eating together in the house called the Earth, ‘family’ is not confined to the blood ties. For our living on the Earth is a sympoietic living with numerous nonhumans. It means that we human beings as nonhuman families cannot be defined by the modern binary concept of human being as mind and body whose unique faculty lies in the mental capacities. In other words, the definition of human being should be changed. ‘Being-human’ does not lie in any of ‘what’ human being is, but in how it emerges, that is, in process. ‘Being’ emerges not from any substance or autopoiesis but out of sympoiesis. Thus, ‘being-human’ is not defined as any faculty or characteristics but as actor-network being constituted with nonhuman beings. This multiplicity of being-human means that the biological world, including the human world, does not consist of infinite competition, the survival of the fittest, and the winner-take-all effect but of sympoiesis, making-with. It is due to a human capability to extend itself over nonhuman beings, that is, extendibility. This article argues that it is none other than residing-as-humans (與人). The residing-as-humans is none other than staying and making with other beings(與物), and, in this sense, being-human is already always familial assemblage. From the perspective of this article, this is the theological meaning that we are one family in God.
