〈강감찬열전〉 번역과 시대 담론 연구

국문 초록

이글은 번역자들이 『고려사』 「강감찬열전」을 번역하면서 시대에 따라 당대의담론을 어떻게 수용했는지를 살폈다. 우기선은 『고려사』 「강감찬열전」과 문헌설화인 ‘호환퇴치설화’ 그리고 구전설화인 ‘금와훤설화’ 등을 수용해서 「강감찬전」 을 서술했다. 그는 ‘호환퇴치설화’를 통해 풍속을 개량하지 않으면 영웅이 출현해도 위기에 처한 나라를 구할 수 없으며, 풍속개량을 통해 문명 강국으로 나아가야 한다는 당대의 담론을 생산 및 유통했다. 반면, 박건회는 우기선이 민족주의적 관점에서 서술한 부분들을 삭제했다. 이를테면 우승열패·약육강식의 상황을 설명하고 국가의 존망으로부터 민중을 구원할 영웅의 호명과 민족 구성원의 풍속개량에 대한 언술 그리고 나라가 극히 어지러우면 하늘이 일대 위인을 보낸다는 부분을 삭제했다. 또 ‘금와훤설화’ 를 통해서는 강감찬과 조선총독부 총독을 동일시했다. 박건회는 우기선본을 순한글로 옮기면서 침략자인 일본의 눈으로 우리 민족을 바라보며 식민지 지배 이데올로기를 충실히 이행하는 번역을 시도한 것이다. 민족주의 역사학자 장도빈은 낙성대설화의 허구적인 요소와 ‘호환퇴치설화’ 그리고 ‘금와훤설화’를 수용하지 않았고, 역사적 사실에 방점을 두고 있다. 그는「강감찬전」을 통해서 장기화된 민족의 수난을 극복할 위인, 수양과 수신으로 문무를 겸비하고 민족을 위해 자기를 희생하는 ‘평범한 위인’을 「강감찬장군전」을통해서 호명했다. 이러한 ‘차이’는 작가들이 「강감찬열전」을 한문에서 국한문혼용과 국문으로 번역하는 과정에서 새롭게 해석하고, 시대 담론을 적극적으로 수용하여 생산하고유통한 결과였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to investigate how translations of the History of Goryeo and the Biography of Gang Gam-chan reflects the discourse of the times. Wu Gi-seon narrated the Chronicles of Gang Gam-chan reflecting the History of Goryeo, Biography of Gang Gam-chan, the “Tale of defeating a tiger” as a literary tale, and the “Tale of stopping the croaking of frogs” as an orally transmitted story. Wu produced and spread the discourse of his days, insisting in the “Tale of defeating a tiger” that even a hero could not save an endangered country without renovation of custom and that a country should advance to become a civilized powerhouse through the renovation of custom. However, Bak Geon-hoe deleted the descriptions by Wu Gi-seon that were based on a nationalist viewpoint describing the survival of the fittest and the law of the jungle, the renovation of custom by the nation’s members, and the call for a hero to save the public from the end of their country who would be sent from heaven when a country is in desperate straits. Moreover, Bak identified Gang Gam-chan with the governor of the Japanese Government General of Korea through the “Tale of stopping the croaking of frogs.” Bak tried to faithfully comply with the colonial ruling ideology of Japan, the invader, in his treatment of the Koreans when translating the version by Wu Gi-seon into Korean. Jang Do-bin, the nationalist historian, did n’ot accept the fictional elements in the tale of Nakseongdae, the “Tale of defeating a tiger,” or the “Tale of stopping the croaking of frogs,” but rather emphasized the historic facts. In the Biography of the General Gang Gam-chan, Jang called for a hero who would overcome the long ordeal of Koreans and for a “common hero” sacrificing the self for the country and possessing good literary and martial capability built up through moral training and cultivation. The differences among these authors manifested in their translations of the Biography of Gang Gam-chan from Chinese into Korean through their respective viewpoints, reflecting how they successively accepted, produced, and spread the discourses of their times.
