국문 초록

종교에서 ‘宗’이 되는 문제는 곧 생명의 문제이다. 따라서 자살의 문제는 종교의 생명윤리 차원에서 중시되고 깊이 다루어져야 한다. 살아가고자 애쓰는 뭇 생명들의 모습에서 연민의 마음이 나오고 자비심이 나온다. 자비심에서 적극적인 利他의 마음이 나오고 대속과 捨身의 행이 나온다. 자학과 회피의 자살행을 막는 길은 종교가 이러한 적극적인 이타행으로 중생을 인도하는데 있다. 이기기 어렵고 견디기 어려운 고통에 처한 마음에서 심기일전하여 남의 고통을 인식하고 그들의 고통에서 연민의 마음을 내고 그들의 고통을 치유해주고자 할 때 우울하고 번민하며 괴로워하던 마음이 가뿐해지고 밝아지며 생기 있는 마음으로 전환된다. 종교계가 먼저 이러한 길을 실천하여 모범으로 보여주어야 한다. 사회적 병리 현상으로까지 번진 자살의 풍조에 대해 종교계는 책임을 느끼고 자성해야 한다. 불교의 여러 계율에 생명 윤리의 정신이 가득 차 있다. 참회와 지계행은 무거운 업장을 가볍게 해준다. 그래서 어둡고 비관적인 마음에 빠지지 않게 해준다. 그리고 무엇보다 중요한 것은 괴로움을 괴로움으로 알 되 그 원인을 분석해보고 파악해야 한다는 것이다. 원인을 알면 해결책도 나오게 되어 있다. 당면한 괴로움을 해결하려 하지 아니하고, 자살하려는 것은 매우 비굴하고 우매한 일이다. 부모와 모든 중생의 은혜를 저버리는 일이다. 단지 소승적인 지계주의에만 집착하여 소심해지거나 利他를 가로 막는 소극적 행으로 나아가서는 안 된다. 利他를 위한 과감한 파계는 오히려 진정한 持戒行이 된다. 이러한 적극적인 利他의 행으로써 주변의 중생을 살펴보고 관심을 기울여 그들의 고통을 어루만져 주는 사회인이 될 때 利他와 自利가 함께 이루어지게 될 것이다. 이러한 사회인이 많아지는 가운데 자살의 비극은 점차 사라져 갈 것이다.

영문 초록

In a religion, ‘宗’(zong) is a matter of life. Therefore, suicide should be addressed as a critical matter in an aspect of religious bioethics. Mercy and compassion come from the lives that struggle to survive. Mercy brings up an active mindset of “do for the good of the others” & actions of redemption & sacrifice oneself. The way to avoid suicidal actions such as self-tortures & evasion is leading the mankind to an action of “do for the good of the others” by religious enlightenment. When a person tries to change one’s mind from a painful & difficult situation, and perceive others’ pain and feel pity for them, and cure their pain, then the person can finally be relieved from the gloomy & agonizing state of mind, and converts oneself into someone who’s positive & full of life. Religious leaders should set an example for our society by putting this way into a practice first. Religious leaders should feel responsible of today’s suicidal trend which has become a pathological phenomenon in our society, and take a time to self-reflect them- selves. Several Buddhist commandments have full spirits of bioethics. Buddhism should not become timid by obsessing about narrow sticking to Buddhist commandment’s principles or make progress toward a passive action that hinders “do for the good of the others” A daring violation of the Buddhist commandments for “do for the good of the others” will rather result in a genuine “keep to Buddhist commandments” Both “do for the good of the others” & “do for the good of self” will be realized when we become a selfless member of our society who looks out for others & takes care of their pain with an active “do for the good of the others” The tragedy of suicide will gradually disappear amid having these selfless people in our society more and more.
