정산종사의 화합정신

국문 초록

모든 종교가 인류의 화합과 생명공동체적 상생의 사상을 주장하고 있지만 종교간 갈등을 비롯하여 국가주의, 종족주의, 성(Gender), 계급(Class)등에서 갈등은 계속되고 있다. 이 글에서는 작금의 갈등해소를 위한 하나의 방안을 원불교 2대 종법사인 정산종사의 삼동윤리(三同倫理) 사상에 나타난 화합정신에서 찾고자 한다. 삼동윤리란 동원도리(同源道理), 동기연계(同氣連契), 동척사업(同拓事業)을 말한다. 동원도리란 비록 각각의 종교가 지녀온 관습이나 의례형식 등은 서로 다르지만 모든 종교의 근본원리는 같음을 알아서 종교적 화합을 도모하자는 것이다. 즉 종교가 지나친 원리주의에 사로잡혀 이웃종교에 대한 이해와 대화의 문을 닫아버리거나 담을 쌓아가는 아집과 편견에 사로잡힐 것이 아니라 인류의 화합이라는 공동목적을 구현하자는 것이다. 동기연계는 모든 인종과 생령이 근본적으로 하나의 기운으로 연계된 동포임을 알아서 서로가 화합하자는 것이다. 우주는 인간과 인간만의 관계가 아니라 모든 생명체들이 하나로 연결되어 있기 때문에 상대가 불행하면 그와 연기된 나 또한 불행해짐을 알아 서로가 화합하자는 것이다. 동척사업은 모든 사업과 주장이 인류의 평화를 위하여 필요한 것이니 서로가 다름을 긍정하고 각자가 인류를 대동화합 시킬 수 있는 사업정신을 갖자는 것이다. 정산종사가 삼동윤리의 각각의 강령에서 “화합(和合)”을 강조한 이유는 격변하는 시대적 배경에 기인함도 있지만 그동안 역사의 질곡에서 발생한 갈등과 투쟁의 역사가 잘못되었음을 깨우치고 새로운 세계에 대한 비전을 제시하려는 데 더 큰 함의가 있다고 본다. 그러나 인류가 존재하는 한 불가피하게 구별 내지는 차별 현상이 발생하고 시비이해가 뒤따르기 마련이다. 문제는 이 피할 수 없는 필연을 어떻게 타개할 것인가로 귀착되는바 정산종사는 그 해결점을 “화합(和合)의 세 가지 큰 길”인 삼동윤리에서 찾았다고 본다.화합은 언제나 서로 다른 존재를 인정하는 것이다. 다양성이 없는 화합은 존재할 수 없다. 정산종사가 제시하는 “화합정신(和合精神)”은 한편의 사고와 행동을 다른 한 편에 맞추어 통일하려는 것이 아니라 서로 다른 다양성에서 가능한 목적적 통일성을 이루려는 것이다.

영문 초록

All religions induce harmony for mankinds and exert notion of symbiosis based on communal life; despite the fact, there are on-going conflicts among religions, nationalism, tribalism, genders and classes. This paper will suggest a way to solve such conflicts from the doctrine of Jeong-San, the 2nd successor of Won-Buddhism; his sprit of harmony is based on the Triple Identity Ethics (Samdong Ethics). Triple Identity Ethics consist of the Principle of the Identical Origin (Donwondoli), the Bond of Identical Vital Force (Dongkiyeongye), and the Principle of Reclamation with Idential Aim (Dongchuksaup). The Principle of the Identical Origin (Donwondoli) implies that although different religions have their unique customs and ritual ways to practice, we have to realize that they have the same principle bases so that all religions have to compound together. In other words, all religions should not isolate from neighboring religions or build their own territories which prevent to communicate or understand each other with their strong prejudice, on the contrary they have to realize that their principle bases are the same so that they have to cooperate in order to accomplish a common goal for mankinds to build a harmony in a fashion of the religious way. The Bond of Identical Vital Force (Dongkiyeongye) implies that we have to realize that all races and living creatures are brothers and sisters linked with the same sprit so that we must cooperate to build harmony. The universe is not only composed of mankinds but also composed of all living things together. We must realize that if our opponents become unhappy, ourselves who are closely linked to them become unhappy so we must cooperate each other to accomplish harmony. The Principle of Reclamation with Idential Aim (Dongchuksaup) implies that we must work to accomplish harmony from admitting that we are all different entities, however, the different projects and opinions are needed for the peace of mankind. Jeong-San's emphasis of “harmony” in each doctrine of Triple Identity Ethics has a special meaning, admitting that it partially reflects the historical environment; mainly it intends to correct all fighting caused from historical conflicts and struggles obtained from fetters were wrong and it is believed that more important implications is the presenting a vision towards the world. However, differences and distinctions, right and wrong will always persist as long as mankind exist. All the problems lead to the same conclusion, that is how to solve this inevitability. Jeong-San found the clue to the solution from Triple Identity Ethics, which encompasses three great ways for the harmony. Harmony means that each other admits the other's existence. It is quite impossible to have harmony without variety. The sprit of harmony which is presented by Jeong-San is not to unify one's thoughts and actions to others, but to try to find possible ways to fulfill the purpose of the goal from the variety.
