국문 초록

엘리엇의 비개성 시론을 의식하며 그의 시를 읽을 때 흔히 두 가지 도전에 직면하게 된다. 먼저 시인 자신의 경험 그리고 인성과 분리된 서정시가 가능한 것인가의 문제, 그리고 시인이 가공의 인물과 사건을 만들어서 시인과 구분되는 시적 화자나 제재를 사용하더라도 심리적 관점에서 이 비개성적 장치들이 시인의 심리적 경험이나 성향을 반영하지 않을 수 있는 가의 문제가 그것들이다. 당시 프로이트의 영향의 규모로 볼 때 그의 영향이 엘리엇에게 미치지 않았을 가능성은 매우 낮다 또한 융의 집단무의식과 엘리엇의 전통의 개념은 개인보다 인류가 축적해온 총체적 심리와 문화에 더 큰 가치를 부여함으로써 의미 있는 공통점을 보여준다. 또한 두 사람은 현대적 소외의 문제에 맞서 신화에 새로운 해석을 가하거나 신화적 세계관의 도입을 주창하였는데 그 공통된 목적은 근원적 존재와의 연결을 통해 현대인의 삶을 이해하고 문제를 해결하는 것이 필요하다는 입장이었다. 나아가 융이 집단무의식에 상정한 원형은 많은 신비적, 초월적 요소를 포함하고 있는 엘리엇의 시를 효과적으로 읽을 수 있는 관점이 될 수 있다. 그 가운데 엘리엇의 초기시에는 페르소나, 그림자 그리고 아니마의 특징과 연결시켜 이해할 수 있는 부분이 풍부하게 발견된다.

영문 초록

The speakers of T. S. Eliot’s early poems wear masks apparently different from the poet himself, which seems to serve well his poetics of impersonality. This difference poses two challenges in reading his poetry: first, is it justifiable to employ a totally different speaker who doesn’t share the poet’s values and personal traits in lyrical poems; is it also possible for a speaker wearing a non-poet-himself-or-herself mask to speak independently of him or her even on the dimension of psychology? Most psychologists would say ‘no’ to these two questions since lyrical poems would not be possible without active involvement from the poet’s part if the poet may not be aware of his or her own psychological working. Especially depth psychologists including Freudians and Jungians would say that the unconscious must work deeply in many literary creations. We don’t have a clear evidence on whether Eliot was directly influenced by Freud and/or Jung but circumstantially Eliot, as an alert intellectual, should have had accessed their ideas. Eliot’s valuing of tradition and belittling of a poet’s individuality and emotion share much with Jung’s ideas on the collective unconscious and archetypes, the accumulated and patternized sum of psychological adaptation to human existence. Though Eliot may not seem to apply Jung’s archetypal theories in his depictions of his characters in direct fashions, many of his speakers and characters remind the reader of Jungian understandings of the human psyche. This article is an attempt to read Eliot’s early poems by applying Jungian understandings of persona and shadow to some of the speakers and characters of his early poems.
