국문 초록

병치기법은 1920년 출판된 엘리엇의 시집『시』에서 가장 혁신적이며전형적인 몰개성 기법 중의 하나이다. 1917년에 출판된『프루프록과 기타관찰』의 시가 주로 지배적인 하나의 관점을 보여주며 극적인 기법을더 원용했던 반면, 복잡한 목소리를 보여주는『시』는 이미지나 상징 같은 암시적 기법에 더 의존한다. 형이상학파의 위트와 상징주의자의 상징, 조이스의 소설적 방법 등이 동시적으로 적용되면서 암시기법이 더욱 복잡해짐에 따라 의미의 명징성을 해하지 않고자 엘리엇은『시』에서인칭대명사의 사용을 급격히 줄이고 병치기법을 전면에 내세운다. 엘리엇의 독자적인 ‘신화적 방법’은 병치를 더욱 엄격하게 적용하여 순식간에 패러독스를 불러일으키는 암시기법에 다름 아니다. 이미지뿐만 아니라 보이스, 레지스터, 배경, 시간, 언어적 요소, 내러티브 프레임, 그리고문법구조를 망라하는 엘리엇의 병치기법은 과감하게 논리와 코멘트를생략하고 이질적인 것을 나란히 놓음으로써 그가『시』에 수록된 사행시에서 구하고자 한 몰개성의 핵심 자질을 가능케 한 기법이다.

영문 초록

Juxtaposition is one of Eliot’s most typical and innovative devices of impersonality in Poems (1920). While earlier poems in Prufrock and Other Observations (1917) with a single dominant point of view depends more on dramatic method, Poems with multiple voices more on allusive methods such as image and symbol. As his allusion gets more complex with the simultaneous application of the metaphysical wit, Symbolist symbol and Joyce’s novelistic method, Eliot drastically cuts personal pronouns and puts juxtaposition in front not to undermine clarity of meaning. His own mythical method is a method of allusion further strained by juxtaposition, whose resulting effect is sudden illumination of paradoxes. Eliot’s juxtaposition of unexpected elements with no links given comprehends images, voices, registers, settings, times, linguistic elements, narrative frameworks, and even syntactical structures. The essential qualities of impersonality in quatrain poems of Poems are achieved largely by non-logical and non-commented juxtaposition.
