국문 초록

엘리엇이 『네 사중주』에서 추구하는 것은 현상계에서 육화된 신, 즉 성육신이다. 시간에 속박된 인간들은 무시간계를 직접 경험할 수 없다는 인식아래 엘리엇은 다양한 환경에서 드러나는 초월계의 모습을 찾으려고 노력하며 그 경험의 성격을 묘사하고자 노력한다. 시간과 관련해서 엘리엇이 상정하는 존재방식은 세 종류이다. 먼저 시간을 초월한 세계, 즉 시간의 흐름과 관련이 없는 무시간계, 시간의 지배를 받아 생노멸사(生老滅死)하는 현상계, 그리고 마지막으로 현상계에 실현되지는 않았지만 실현될 수 있었던 가능계가 그들이다. 엘리엇은 이 가능계는 현상계가 가진 구체적이고 개별적인 특성 없이, 현상계와 초월계 사이에 존재한다고 생각한다. 엘리엇은 인간들이 경험할 수 있는 초월계는 이 가능계를 통해서라고 본다. 융은 인간의 의식은 무의식에서 비롯되었고 무의식이 힘이 압도적으로 크기 때문에 의식이 무의식의 전체, 혹은 정신 전체의 원리인 ‘자기’를 인식하는 방식이 인간의 신에 대한 관계의 심리적 기초가 된다고 보았다. 하지만 무의식의 내용은 꿈, 환상, 백일몽과 같이 주로 수동적인 양태로만 의식에 전해지는 문제가 있다. 융이 이 문제를 극복하기 위해 고안한 것이 ‘적극적 상상’이다. 의식의 작동을 최소한으로 해서 무의식을 불러들이되 무의식에 의해 압도되지 않은 채로 무의식이 가진 주제를 기억하고 기록할 수 있어야 하는 어려움이 있다. 엘리엇과 융이 『네 사중주』와 적극적 상상에서 추구하는 것은 초월적 세계라는 공통점이 있다.

영문 초록

Eliot seeks an encounter with the Incarnation in Four Quartets in many ways viable. In the work he visits or recalls the four settings, whose atmospheres he feels lead him to time-transcending moments. He reasons that time relates to three different dimensions of existence. One is the time-transcending or timeless world, where nothing is subject to the power of time. Another is the time-bound world as we know it: everything comes into being, grows old, and dies or fades as time works on them. The other is the world of possibility, unrealized but existing in the minds of humanity. Eliot thinks that this world of possibility may bridge the time-bound and timeless worlds. Humanity cannot evade from its physical limitations but it is at the same time allowed certain forms of access to the timeless world by involving relevant environments or conditions. C. G. Jung devises a similar way to the world beyond. He theorizes that the unconscious is the matrix for consciousness, which relates to the self, the principle and totality of the psyche as humanity does to God. The contents or ways of the unconscious are conveyed to consciousness through fantasies, dreams, daydreams, etc., all of which are passive ways of accessing the unconscious. He devises an intentional approach to the unconscious, naming it ‘active imagination.’ People can invite the themes of the unconscious under certain conditions, remaining active only enough to memorize and record the operations of the unconscious invited. This writing aims to describe the similarities and differences between Jung and Eliot in their ways to seek the transcendental, focusing on how Eliot struggles to present his ideas on this issue in the work.
