국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 1927년 엘리엇의 개종 이후 출판된「동방박사들의여행」을 시적 화자인 동방박사의 종교적 명상이라는 주제로 살펴보는것이다. 이 시는 동방박사가 자신의 과거 경험 즉 아기 예수 탄생을 목격했던 경험을 회상하고 그 의미를 생각하는 종교적 명상이다. 그리고이 작품의 제목을 이루는 “여행”은 신비주의적 관점에서 하느님과의 만남을 추구하는 영적 여정 혹은 과정을 의미한다. 비평가들은 아기예수탄생을 목격했던 경험에 대한 동방박사의 반응이 부적절하다고 평가했지만 그 경험 이후 구체제에 대한 그의 불편함과 새로운 믿음에 대한그의 관심을 지적하였다. 이것은 스미스나 기쉬 등과 같은 비평가들이이 작품에서 신비주의적 요소를 지적하게 하였으며 스미스는 동방박사를 십자가의 성 요한의『가르멜의 산길』에서 묘사된 구도자와 비교하기도 하였다. 엘리엇의 후기 작품들에는 기독교 신비주의자들의 작품에서나온 인용이나 제사들이 자주 등장하며 1926년에 행해진 클라크 강연에서도 그의 작품에 주로 인용되었던 십자가의 성 요한을 포함한 스페인신비주의자들에 대한 내용이 나온다. 비평가들이 이 작품을 십자가의성 요한의 작품과 비교했다면 필자는 같은 스페인 신비주의자로서 이냐시오 성인의『영신수련』의 종교적 묵상을 동방박사들의 여행과 비교해보았다. 필자는 이냐시오식 묵상의 한 단계인 장소구성이 엘리엇의 이작품에 적용될 수 생각하는데, 이 장소구성은 종교시에 중요한 요소이고 또 엘리엇의 작품 중 특히 1연에서 표현된 화자의 힘들고 고통스러운 여행 묘사에 적용될 수 있다.

영문 초록

The aim of this paper is to examine “Journey of the Magi” in the perspective of the magus’ religious meditation. This poem is a kind of religious meditation in which the magus reminisced about his past experience of witnessing the birth of Christ and considered its meaning. And the word “journey,” which consists the title of this poem, means a spiritual journey or process to seek a meeting with God. Critics insisted that the magus’ response to the birth of Christ was improper, but they indicated his uncomfortableness with the old dispensation and his interest in the newly acquired faith after the experience. This made critics like Gish or Smith indicate the mystical aspect in this poem, and Smith compared the magus with the seeker described by St. John of the Cross in The Ascent of Mount Carmel. Eliot often used quotations or epigraph from Christian mystics’ works in his later works, and explained some Spanish mystics including St. John of the Cross in the clark lectures in 1926. While critics compared this poem with the works of St. John of the Cross, I did this poem with St. Ignatius’ The Spiritual Exercises. I think the composition of the place, the one step of the Ignatian meditation which is greatly important to religious poems, can be appled to this poem, especially the description of the speaker’s bitter and hard journey in its first stanza.
