국문 초록

엘리엇은 니콜라스 페라의 영국의 종교 공동체인 리틀 기딩에서 자신의 앵글로 가톨릭의 종교적 정체성을 찾았다. 엘리엇은 「리틀 기딩」에서 자신의 신앙과 믿음의 교리인 성육화를 제시했으며 성요한의 십자가나 단테와 같은 가톨릭의 신앙의 전통을 시로 구현했다. 엘리엇은 「리틀 기딩」에서 역사에 주목하며 찰스 1세와 청교도간의 종교전쟁이 인간의 욕망이 신앙의 이름으로 변한 역사적 사건에 주목하며 역사는 반복되고 있음을 보여준다. 시인은 시간 속에 영원이 내려오는 성육화가 정점으로 표현되는 신비체험을 「리틀 기딩」에서 보여주며 자신의 죄를 깊이 인식하며 역사에서 은총이 오는 정점의 순간에 앵글로 가톨릭적인 신앙의 정체성을 제시한다.

영문 초록

Little Gidding was a spiritual and religious community of Anglo-Catholicism in Anglican history of the Church of England. T. S. Eliot acknowledged Nicholas Ferrar and his family as an ideal community forming the tradition of Anglican community here in 1625. King Charles I wanted to keep the ritual and doctrine of Catholicism in the Church of England, visited it in 1642, and sought Little Gidding as a refuge, keeping his Anglo-Catholic background in 1646. The poet Eliot visited it again in 1936, and reflected upon the Church and its history in the last of his Four Quartets: “Little Gidding”. T. S. Eliot believes the central doctrine of Anglo-Catholicism is Incarnation that is expressed as the still point in Four Quartets. The poet recollects the meaning of historical miseries of CharlesⅠvisiting the church of Little Gidding in 1646, and he encountered religious experience of timeless in time, having time of detachment from worldly desire. In “Little Gidding”, he contemplated ‘eternal now’ described as the still point of mysterious experience in Little Gidding Church that is free from the unfulfilled desire of the past history as well as the fear of the future.
