국문 초록

하이델베르크 교리문답서(1563, 이하 HC)는 성경의 진리를 개혁신학과 성경신학의 체계를 따라 문답식으로 탁월하게 풀어냄으로써 전 세계적으로 확산했다. 그런데 HC는 오늘날 여전히 사랑받고 활용되고 있는가? 긍정적으로 대답하기 어려운 이 질문은 HC는 물론 다른 신앙고백서들의 현대적 활용 문제와 맞물린다. 그런데 HC를 오늘날 활발히 논의 중인 공공신학과 선교적 교회 혹은 2010년경부터 이 둘을 통합한 공공선교신학(public missional theology)의 관점에서 연구한 경우는 아직 없다. 그런데 최근에 HC에는 교회로부터 세상으로 나아가는 역동성이 부족하기에, HC에 따르면 교회가 명시적으로 선교의 책무를 가지고 있다고 보기 어렵다는 주장이 제기되었다. 본 연구는 HC에 교회가 공적 영역에서 수행해야 할 선교에 대한 강조가 실제로 결여되었는가를 염두에 둔 채, HC의 기독론, 교회론, 종말론, 그리고 십계명 해설에 담긴 공공선교신학적 의미를 살핀다. 이 연구 주제가 합당한 이유는 교회는 성령께서 그리스도와 연합시켜 하나님의 선교를 위해 부름 받은 종말의 백성이기 때문이다. 그리고 본 연구는 공공성(公共性)과 공동선(公同善)을 회복해야 하는 숙제를 떠안은 현대교회가 HC와 같은 역사적 정통 개혁주의 신앙고백서를 어떻게 적절히 활용할 수 있는가에 과한 지침이 되는 논구로서 의의가 있다. 성경을 요약한 HC를 비롯하여 역사적 신앙고백서를 공공선교적 관점으로 읽는 시도는 타당하다. 현대교회가 수백 년 전의 신앙고백서라는 유산을 그저 반복하는 데 그치지 말고, 그것을 신학과 신앙의 길동무로 삼아 현대 상황에 비추어 새롭게 해석하고 적용하는 시도를 게을리하지 않도록 진력해야 한다.

영문 초록

The Heidelberg Catechism (1563, hereafter HC) spread throughout the world by excellently unravelling the truth of the Bible in a question-and-answer format following the system of Reformed and biblical theology. But is HC still loved and used today? This question, which is difficult to answer positively, is intertwined with the modern use of HC as well as other confessions. So far, there has been no case of studying HC in terms of public theology and missional church, which are actively discussed today, or public-missional theology, which has integrated the two since around 2010. But recently one insists that since HC lacks the dynamism from the church to the world, the church does not explicitly have a missionary responsibility in HC. This study examines the public-missional implications of HC’s Christology, ecclesiology, eschatology, and the commentary on the Ten Commandments, keeping in mind the question of whether HC lacks the emphasis on missions that the church should carry out in the public spheres. This research topic is reasonable in that the church is the people of the eschatos called by the Holy Spirit to unite with Christ for the missio Dei. It is hoped that this study will be a guide to properly use historical orthodox Reformed confessions such as HC by the contemporary church, which has the task of restoring publicness and common good. It is reasonable to try to read historical confessions of faith, including HC, which summarizes the Bible, from a public missional perspective. The modern church should not just repeat the legacy of the Confession of Faith , but should make every effort not to neglect the attempt to interpret and apply it anew in light of the modern situation, using it as a companion for theology and faith.
